Are you thinking about starting a podcast but have no idea how to come up with a good name? Does trying to figure out taglines and SEO seem overwhelming? Or do you have a show but want to make it the best it can be? There’s a lot to think about when you start a podcast and having an SEO-friendly podcast name and tagline is an important way to help your ideal listener be able to find you. In today’s blog, I have 4 steps for creating a clear, catchy, SEO-driven title and tagline that your avatar won’t be able to miss.
How to Pick an Epic Podcast Name and Title When You Start a Podcast
1.When you start a podcast, you first need to decide who you serve
To pick the best podcast name and tagline, you must decide what your business is and who you serve. This might be something you’ve gone through and gained the knowledge and skills to teach, or it might be something you did/learned professionally that you’d like to teach your audience. The possibilities are endless.
The main thing to remember is to niche down so that you are clear on who you serve and how you serve them. You want to know precisely what transformation needs to happen for your listener and how you can help them achieve it. To market yourself and your show, you need super clear messaging.
2.Things to consider in a podcast name
There are many things to consider when naming a podcast, you want a clear specific name, but you also want the title to have meaning so you and your listener can connect with it.
Things to think about:
Make the name clear in who you serve or how you serve them. You want the name to make sense for your podcast.
Don’t make the name too specific. You don’t want to be limited by your podcast name in the future so give yourself some space to grow. A name like: Live Coaching and Wellness is too specific and doesn’t give you room to grow. You will be stuck doing live coaching and wellness until you either quit or rebrand. Neither of these are ideal.
Understand the language and heart behind your podcast and your person. This will help you create a meaningful name that resonates with your ideal listener and helps the title come up when they are looking for content.
Creating a meaningful podcast name
Next, we want to take these words and the components of the brand to find the common denominator of what the listener takes away from the show.
These are important to think about as they are the transformation you are providing your listener with. I like to channel some words and ideas and brainstorm at this stage. Clarity and alliterations are good; play around with some ideas until you find the perfect name.
Check if your podcast name is available
Once you’ve narrowed down your names, the next step is to see if the name is available. To be able to use the name, it needs to be free in each of these places.
No other podcasts are using your desired name.
Check that the URL is not taken; if .com is taken and not being used or is being used for something completely different, you can add the word podcast or show to the end — for example, walkandworthpodcast.com.
Is it trademarked? If it is trademarked, you’ll have to change it slightly so as not to get in legal trouble (I’m not a lawyer so take this with a grain of salt!)
You’re good to go if your podcast name passes these three tests. It’s time to start writing your tagline.
3. Create a clear tagline to complement your podcast name
Once you’re happy with your podcast name, it’s time to create your tagline. Ideally, the tagline should complement your title well and explain what the show is about in more detail. You want to include an indicator of each element you talk about on your podcast. Now, this is only a sentence, so you don’t want to say everything, but enough that the person thinking about listening understands what it’s about.
Once you’ve got these pieces together, you’ve done the bulk of the outlining for your new podcast. Getting the tagline and title right is important because they are the first thing anyone sees when they first come across your show.
4. Choose a description to go with your tagline and podcast name
Your podcast description is the final thing you need when you start a podcast. The description’s role is to explain in detail to your listeners what the show is about and hook them into listening. We want to combine the language we brainstormed, our listeners’ deepest desire/biggest issue, and how we can help them.

I hope this has helped you create your own epic name and tagline. Creating a podcast name and tagline is about digging into who your avatar is and how you can serve them. It’s getting into the heart of why they might listen to your show and choosing language which speaks to them. Don’t be afraid to brainstorm and play around with words until you get something that speaks to you and your listener!
