Do you have a new online business idea that you’d love to bring to life but have no idea where to start? It can be flat-out terrifying to start something new but taking that first step is necessary. You can’t build a successful online business without starting somewhere. In today’s blog, I walk you through four fundamental truths to help you start before you’re ready.
4 Truths to Help You Start Before You’re Ready With Your New Online Business Idea
1.God doesn’t call the qualified, He qualifies the called.
Do you feel scared to start your new online business idea? Are you wanting to take the leap, but don’t know how to start before you’re ready? If you need some encouragement, here is it! God doesn’t call the qualified, He qualifies the called.
Look at every disciple and story in scripture, none of them were out there going, I’m going to apply for the job for fishing for men, or I think I’m going to start building an ark. Instead, God said, you are called, and because I am calling you, I will qualify you – I will give you what you need to get the job done. No one in scripture was ever ready! Moses was like, heck no! Jonah even ran away and tried to hide from God!
You’ve got to step up and realize, you will be qualified, but only after you receive the call. Joshua 1:9 says, “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” And these words are repeated so many times throughout the scripture.
You can be confident you are NOT alone as you walk out your new online business idea or ministry. If you are called, then God is with you. You wouldn’t be feeling like this in your spirit if you weren’t.
2. Feeling ready is a deception.
Whoever told you that you should feel totally ready before you start something new is a liar. But let’s get honest. Did anyone ever actually tell you that? Or did you create this illusion in your heart and mind that there is another level of readiness that will make everything easier if you reach it?
There is no ready in starting, taking action, starting a podcast, or a new online business idea. Did you feel ready to do all of the big, amazing, and great things you’ve done in your life? I know I certainly didn’t. Not for my kids, my business, or my podcast.
The deception of ready keeps you from moving forward. The deception tells you to wait longer, learn more, and think about it harder. I don’t want to diminish discernment and waiting in prayer in those aspects. But this is for those of you who have felt God’s prompting and conviction that you should be starting but are scared to start before you’re ready.
3. Confidence is built through discomfort.
If you feel self-conscious, worried, or have a sense of discomfort about starting, the only way to overcome that is to push through it. The only way to find confidence is to get really uncomfortable and prove to yourself that you can do it.
The first time I was asked to speak at an event, there were probably 25 people there and I was terrified. I was shaking so badly you could see the mic shaking in my hand. I completely blacked out mentally, and I had no idea what I said! It was awful and I vowed to never do it again. But the next time I was asked to speak, I did it. I was still terrified but I was shaking less and I could actually remember what I said that time (so I felt a bit better about it!). The third time, no problem. The fourth time, I had the room laughing and the fifth time they asked me to be a speaker at the event.
When getting your new online business idea, you first have to decide what step one is. I recommend that you start with a podcast. How do you start that? Well, maybe you just sit down and record the very first episode. You aren’t going to feel confident and it’s not going to be your best work and that’s okay. By episode 10 you’re going to be 10x better and by episode 100 you’ll be a superstar.
You can continue to grow by going through different levels of discomfort. Discomfort never fully goes away. There’s always a new level to your calling. If you’re willing to be uncomfortable, God will use you to glorify Him through the giftings He has given you.
4. Action is the only possible positive outcome.
Waiting isn’t an outcome you want. Neither is overthinking or delaying it. Action is going to propel you forwards – even messy, awkward, unprofessional action. Not unprofessional in a bad way! It is okay to bootstrap things together at the start. If I hadn’t taken messy action at the start I wouldn’t have my business today.
If you are prompted to start something new, whether that’s a ministry, business, or writing a book. You are going to feel unqualified and unsure but that’s why you have to say yes and push through. So you can get to the beautiful fruit that is on the other side of your yes and big audacious action.
