Do you ever feel like you’re not connecting with your target market? Have you ever wondered what questions you should be asking to get to know your avatar? It can be tough to know how to connect with your ideal clients if you don’t know what they want. Sounds simple, right?!
I regularly get questions like this because knowing your target market underpins everything in business, from your content to what you sell. If you can get your market research right, it even makes selling a breeze!
Top Questions to Ask for Market Research
But first, what even is market research?
First of all, you might be asking what is market research? Market research is getting to know your person, your ideal client avatar (ICA). This means finding out everything about what this person wants, needs, or desires. What are their dreams and struggles, and what specific words do they use to describe them?
Knowing this information lets you know what they are searching for and what keywords you should use in your podcast and marketing. This even helps them find your podcast. It’s important to remember that if you are talking to everyone, you are talking to no one!
So, now you have an overview of how important market research is; how do you actually conduct market research?
How to start your market research and get to know your target market:
The first step in getting to know your target market is to find out where they are and start engaging with them:
Ask questions that narrow down who she is or who she isn’t
The top two market research questions we need to answer to understand our target market:
What is my ideal client’s number one want?
What is my ideal client’s biggest struggle, setback, or obstacle?
It’s super important to narrow this down to one thing they want and one main reason they can’t achieve it. Remember, this isn’t a process that happens quickly. As your business grows and you get to spend more time with your target market and ask them questions, you’ll get to know them more deeply. The wider the base of people you can engage with, the more and more you’ll be able to understand them and how to serve them.
It’s a long road getting to know your target market, and sometimes you think you know until you start talking to people and realize you don’t 100% know.
I recommend doing market research every 90 days to ensure you KNOW what your client avatar is looking for.
Example market research questions for your target market:
These can be asked as questions, via polls, or by talking to people on the phone or zoom.
If you are trying to make money online, what have you tried that didn’t work out and why?
If you have a side hustle, how’s it going? What’s working? What isn’t working?
If you want to be an entrepreneur, what haven’t you started yet? What’s holding you back?
If you’ve tried a side hustle and it’s failed, why?
Asking questions like these, and picking your avatar’s brain will give you the data you need to answer the two vital questions; what is the one thing they want the most, and what is their biggest setback?
Knowing how to solve these questions is how you help your niche market. It covers everything from content on your podcast to what you sell, whether that is resources you’ve created or affiliate marketing.
Get to know your target market
Nailing your market research is all about getting to know your target market. If you can figure out what your ideal client needs, and why they can’t get it and provide them with the solutions, this will provide you with revenue for the rest of your life.
Knowing your ideal client will tell you what content to make and what to sell. If you want to be successful, you can’t answer the questions you think they have; you have to get out there and learn what questions and needs they actually have.
