Learn How to Start an Online Coaching Business and Create Revenue
Coaching is simply helping people do what you have already done in the past. It doesn’t need to be more complicated than that! You don’t need a qualification to have a conversation with someone about something you’ve done.
Is Coaching Right for You?
Short answer: absolutely! I believe coaching is a must for people in the online space. It’s a way for you to create revenue immediately in your business without needing to invest in all the fancy tech that comes with courses or programs.
All you need is to understand what your avatar really needs (not what you think they need). There are so many benefits from focusing on coaching first before anything else. Coaching allows you to:
Practice your craft
Get comfortable working with people online
Charge a premium for your time
Make money immediately without any overhead
Fine-tune what your customer needs
Do market research to learn more about your avatar
Yes, I believe courses are the direction you eventually want to go in your business, but by starting with coaching, you can get clear on the solution first so you know your course is going to be a home run.
How to Start an Online Coaching Business
Getting started is super simple. The first thing you need to do is show up and serve with your free thing. I personally recommend podcasting as your free content method, but you can do videos or blogs too. If you don’t have a podcast but are interested in starting one, check out my course Podcast Pro University! It’ll teach you everything you need to know about creating a podcast.
Once you have your free content method chosen and you’re showing up to serve and solve problems, all you have to do is invite people to sit down with you in coaching sessions! It really is that simple. You’re going to invite people to a 30-minute session and pick a price based on what you would earn at a job (you can charge more later, but use this as your starting point).
How to Find Clients for Your Online Coaching Business So You Can Create Revenue
Finding clients is simple. You’re going to promote your coaching through your free content vessel. It doesn’t need to be icky or complicated, just a simple invite will work!
Ask them to send you an email saying they’re interested in signing up for a session, and you can take care of the rest from there.
3 Steps to Set Up Your Call
Once you’ve received that email from your new student, you’re going to send them one email back with the 3 steps they need to follow to set up their call with you.
E-sign a contract. You need a contract regardless of the type of coaching you’re doing. My favorite place to find templates is The Legalpreneur (Use the code STEFGASS to save $20!) I use SignNow to do all my e-signing. It keeps things quick and straightforward!
Your student pays the invoice. Get them to do this upfront. The easiest way to get started with this is just to use Paypal invoicing. It’s simple and free.
Ask them to book a time. I use Calendly to do this. You can get started with their free version without needing to pay for their paid plans. Easy! You can also link your Calendly account to Zoom so it automatically sends you and your student the link to your call. You can also use Calendly to send reminders to your students.
On the Call With Your New Coaching Client
Coaching is client-led. You listen to what your student is telling you about the struggles and frustrations they’re experiencing, and you help them solve their problem. You already know all the answers because you’re doing it already yourself.
Ask your student to come to you with one problem they want to solve. This keeps you both focused and gives you direction for the call.
Wrap Up Your Call Well
Always finish your calls with a quick recap in the last five minutes. This will establish good time boundaries and helps your student process everything you just talked about. Take them through what you solved for them and ask them how they feel!
Always remember to ask them for a review. This is great credibility for you and a big part of helping you create revenue easily.
Now You Know How to Start an Online Coaching Business!
Coaching is the easiest thing in the world to do, especially when you know your stuff (which you do because you’re already talking about it online). Here’s a quick recap of all the steps:
Choose your free content vessel (I recommend podcasting)
Show up to serve and solve problems
Invite your audience to sign up for a session with you
Get them to sign the contract, pay your invoice, and book their time
Get on the call, listen to their problems, and then solve them
Wrap up the call with a quick recap and ask for a review
And now you’re officially a coach!
If you’re just getting started in your business, this is the easiest way to create revenue quickly. There’s very little overhead so you get to keep almost everything you earn. And it’s so simple! Now you know how to start an online coaching business, and you can use this as the foundation to grow!
