There is a right way, and a wrong way, to start a podcast. These podcasting tips are the steps you need to take including planning, executing, and launching. I’m going to walk you through 10 tips you need to follow to successfuly and sustainable start a podcast the right way. Let’s get to them!
10 Podcasting Tips to Help You Plan, Execute and Launch Your New Show
1. Know Why You Want To Start a Podcast
For me, there were many reasons.
God told me to in October 2018. I was obedient because He knows better than me.
My other reason was I was tired of video. I’m fine on video but it felt awkward. I love talking so much more.
My third reason why I was doing it was that I knew you, my Lola, my avatar, are busy and aren’t watching videos. You can listen to a podcast while living life and do not watch youtube videos.
Take time to sit and write this down. What is your why? If you aren’t sure, check out Clarify Your Calling. I can help you figure this whole step out and then some.
2. Know Who The Podcast Is For
You don’t need absolute clarity right now. You won’t know fully who your avatar is until you are podcasting for a while. BUT, you need to know who your podcast is for.
Who are the people you want to help? Who are you talking to? What is their interest that you want to guide them deeper into? What gift have you been given that you want to share with them?
If you don’t know who you want to talk to, please don’t start a podcast.
Be sure to write this all down in your notebook.
3. Identify Your Micro-Niche
You need to be willing to get into the details of what you want to do and who you want to serve. When you know this your podcast will be much more successful and sustainable.
If it’s gardening, is it for new gardeners or experienced gardeners? Is it gardening in the desert? You can’t just talk about gardening, you have to let people know if your show is for them and where they are at in life. Is it a mom who wants to start a garden?
4. Give Your Podcast A SEO Specific Title
SEO keywords are a seriously undervalued component of a successful, sustainable podcast. It needs to pop up in google! If it’s super light and fluffy, it’s not going to pop up in a google search. People will see the name and pass it up because they don’t know it’s for them. While it might feel boring it needs to be easy for people to understand what you’re talking about.
If this feels completely overwhelming, I teach you all about this in Podcast Pro University. You do not need to spend hours on the internet and Pinterest reinventing the wheel.
5. Be Sure You Are Legally Clear to Use the Podcast Name You Choose
It’s tempting to see someone’s name and want to do something similar but you will receive a cease and desist letter a year into building your business and have to shut it down. How do you legally protect your business and podcast?
Check the Trademark website and see if the name you want has been trademarked
Check GoDaddy.com and make sure it’s not purchased by someone and is actively used.
6. Have Scene Stealing Podcast Art
I’ve made podcast art myself and it was bad. Sure Canva has templates but nothing compares to having an expert put together something beautiful, professional, and stands out.
Podcast art is inexpensive. Good podcast art will get you all of the right attention and will get you seen. People will click to listen because of it.
7. Focus on Niche Specific, Keyword Driven Titles For Your Podcast
You need to be found by the people you want to talk to. The only way they will find you is if your keywords are all over your podcast titles and descriptions.
Having specific, keyword-driven titles means you will come up in searches for those newbies to gardening, for example.
8. Be Vulnerable and Storytell From Day One
You are creating lifelong bonds with people. You want your audience to know you like a best friend. They will binge on your episodes and walk away feeling like you’re their best friend.
By being vulnerable you invite them into the reality of your life. When they join you in that, they also join in your mission and will invest in your products. They will invest because they like you, trust you, and know you can help them.
9. Do Not Overspend When You Start Your Podcast
You do not need a $2k microphone and egg-crate foam on the wall. You also don’t need an editor.
A yeti mic is $120 (sometimes I even record on my phone!)
Podbean is $10 a month
Audacity and Garage Band are free
Edit as you go
That’s literally all you need. Podcasting is the most inexpensive and easiest way to build your business. You do not need to overspend to launch your podcast.
10. Have Accountability and a Step-By-Step Plan

If you want organic growth without any hustle, podcasting is the answer. I spend less than 30 hours in my business and it is all thanks to the podcast and God. My whole business started with me deciding to move forward with what God had planted in my heart and leaping forward.
Without accountability and a plan, you will not launch your podcast. If you don’t have a step-by-step plan you will probably miss essential steps that will limit the initial success of your podcast.
