defeat the enemy, strongholds and spiritual warfare
Hey Friend!
I have been in this season of being in my own way as my company continues to grow and expand. Even though we have had a phenomenal first quarter, we are experiencing growing pains. There are blessings that come from the growth of our business but it still can be hard to adjust to the changes that take place as the business grows. There’s a constant struggle, a never-ending shift, but there have been 3 things that have helped me stop getting in my own way. I want to pass that along to you as you go through the ebbs and flows of running your online business.
Review Spotlight:
“It’s Brittany Poppy from the Does God Forgive Abortion podcast and I just had to come and give you a sincere thank you. I never could have launched my podcast without you. I am halfway through Podcast for Profit right now and I am seeing incredible growth from my podcast. I am consistently growing in my super fan number every single month and I am getting ready to launch my coaching program for women who are struggling with shame and guilt. I am just so thankful because I never would have been able to do this without your training in Podcast For Profit (P2P). I cannot wait to see what the last half of P2P will have and I just want to thank you so much for believing in me and for teaching me what I need to go out and be a disciple of Jesus thank you, Stef.”
Getting In Your Own Way
Are you in your own way? How do you even know if you are in your own way? When I was in my own way I was making excuses about why I had to get back to work, why I needed to finish this “thing”, why everything felt hard, and why there was this never-ending backlog of things to do.
We tend to make excuses over why all the things are so hard. One of my big red flags is when the fleshly things are more important than the spiritual things. That’s when I know I’m in my own way. I don’t feel at peace in my life. God is not a God of confusion and He is not a God of fear. But if I am in a state of confusion and fear, then it must be self-created. I have to be able to stop and take a look at why it’s happening, what narrative have I created for myself and why am I leaning into it so much?
2 Preliminary Steps To Stop Getting In Your Own Way
First, you have to recognize the fact that you are getting in your own way. Second, you have to have a healthy mindset. I like to stay focused on my priorities and setting boundaries. I can stay very disciplined and self-motivated. My team is my rock and I have everything in place through them, but I still get in my own way. If you feel the same, just know you are not alone.
We become our own lid and the roadblock to the next level of success. It could be the negative thought that might block us from saying yes to something big, or from taking the next right step. Typically we overanalyze and get stuck in analysis paralysis mode. Don’t let these little roadblocks stop you or derail you.
The Beautiful Truth
Here is the beautiful truth: it’s going to happen and it’s OK because we have a solution to get out of it. We just have to be able to identify it first. When I face a setback or a problem, I look at it as an opportunity to grow not as something that’s going to take me out. This is a major perspective shifting and it’s having that flow mindset. You want to flow through it rather than stop in the middle of the tracks. Avoid the derailment and take it in strides. But first, you need to recognize it in order to get through it.
Tip #1 – Reframe from Small Problems to Big Picture
The very first thing that helped me to stop getting in my own way was I had to reframe from small problems to the big picture. Here is an example: we have a bunch of new things happening within our team right now. We are onboarding a lot of new interns plus we have some other staff positions that are shifting around. We are in the middle of a lot of big changes.
Sometimes the middle is uncomfortable for me. Within the company we have new positions we are trying to fill, extended SOPs are being built out, new tutorials are being made and there are a lot of the pieces to the puzzle that need to be put in place before the new round of interns come in. This is a small problem to have when trying to build a kingdom company. I could get overwhelmed with all the things I have to do but I could also get excited about all the new positions I get to fill.
Look for Opportunities
I have to look at it as an opportunity. I’m shifting my mindset to see this as an opportunity to create more space within my company — space for growth. I’m creating more opportunities for people to learn how to grow their own kingdom business. Do you see how we go from a negative to a positive way of thinking? Any time you are faced with a problem or a dilemma, ask yourself how to reframe that into the big picture positive. Remind yourself that this is a small problem.
For example, you might say to yourself:
“I don’t fit in my pants. I feel overweight so I’m going to go on a diet for the next 5 years.”
How do we reframe that into the big picture? You could say:
”I’m so excited that today is the first day of the rest of my life where I can be healthy. I’m so grateful that I get to go shopping and buy some healthy organic food. I’m looking forward to doing some meal prep time throughout the week.”
What is the opportunity? What are the big picture positives that can come from this? Every day write the answers down on a piece of paper and before long you’re going to train your brain and train your subconscious to look at things in a new light.
Tip #2 – Get Back Into The Word
The second thing that really helped me stop getting in my own way is I got back in the Word. Having a morning routine that includes your Bible is so important. I spend an hour with God. I have been doing it for years but this year has been the hardest. I often times feel like I am in a hurry, a hurry to finish things. I feel like I have to get work done in an urgent matter, but I’m not sure why. The company is doing great and we have made more revenue this quarter than we ever before. The pressure I have is self-induced.
When I did a little self-reflection on what the difference is now compared to before when I was feeling more peaceful in my business, I realized I was not in the Word as much as I used to be. We take care of our bodies physically with healthy eating and exercise, but we need to spiritually be healthy by staying rooted in the Word and opening the Bible more.
I pray all day, but I need to touch the pages of the Bible and get deeper in the Word. It’s so important to me to have a renewed mind as I go into my day. Before I speak to my kids, my husband, and my team, before I record a podcast episode, I need to get into the Word first. If I didn’t get in the Word I’m probably not going to be in the highest frame of mind. It’s so important to be going into our business from a position of spiritual fullness.
Tip #3 – Have Coaches and Mentors
The third thing that helped me stop getting in my own way is having coaches and mentors in my life. I have been meeting with the spiritual growth mentor for 3 years. Year after year we keep having these breakthroughs and I get reinforcement that I need to keep meeting with her. I believe that everyone needs guidance in some area of their life and if God blesses that for you, you should continue to lean in on what God has provided for you. If you prayed about having a coach or a mentor and he opens that door for you and you feel the fruit come from it, then you should continue to move forward with what God has in store for you.
I have seen such exponential growth in my own life from the conversations I have had with my coaches and mentors. Being able to talk through things from a biblical perspective and pray with someone has been so valuable for me. My coaches help push me to do things that I don’t want to do but I know it’s going to help me grow.
Stop Making Excuses
My coach challenged me and asked me why am I not in the Word. What’s going on? I could hear myself making excuses saying things such as I needed more sleep, I had a lunch things going on and I couldn’t, I was tired, etc. But think of it this way, if you know God is impressing on your heart to get up and sit with him because that time and space is so critically important for the way that you operate in your life, why are you not making that a priority? My coach asked me that. She asks the hard questions in order to get me to move and do something better for myself.
Spiritual Changes Happen When You Are Rooted in The Word
Now that I am back in the Word, I’ve noticed a huge change, and now I’m not getting in my own way. When I’m in the Word, something important always sticks out to me. God tells me something I need to know. He’s speaking right to me through the scripture. He’s helping me prepare for what’s coming that day. My mentor and coach have been pivotal for me along this journey.
What is the area that you feel like you are in your own way? Take the time to invest in yourself. There have been times when I couldn’t invest in my own self. But when I could and I invested in coaches, there was always fruit on the other side.
Reaching New Levels with Coaches and Mentors
As your business grows, you will need to continue to reach new levels and the best way to do that is through coaching. I believe God positions different coaches and mentors in my life based on where we need help. We are expanding the operations side of the business, which is not my strength. I like to take big ideas and then take massive action on those ideas. I need a team to help me do that. Now I have a team that I lead and consists of over a dozen people.
My coach explained to me that when you make a decision, it’s impacting your entire company. My coach helped me realize I need to work together with my team to create different processes that work well together. I have to stop being a bulldozer and be more mindful about big decisions. Hearing my coach tell me this has helped me to realize I was getting in my own way.
It’s OK to Wait and Sit in the Middle
I was pushing forward on stuff that sounded good but I needed to wait and pause and recognize that we didn’t have to do everything yesterday. It’s ok to wait and sit in the middle. Stop pushing so hard and hustling and striving. Instead just sit and stay humbled in His truth that He is our Lord and Shepherd and that we have everything we need. It’s good to sit in His peacefulness and let Him lead the way. Stop feeling burdened and avoid feeling pressured to do everything yesterday. Let God lead.
My coaches have helped me understand this. I have had many coaches, from Spiritual coach to health coach to operational business coach, and beyond. I am part of a mastermind that helps me grow in my business. I recommend you have the same.
The 3 Things That Helped Me Stop Getting In My Own Way
The three things that helped me stop getting in my own way are:
1. Reframing from small problem to big picture
2. Getting back in the Word daily every morning
3. Have coaches and mentors in the areas of your life where you need the most help
Journal and Decide What Action You Are Going To Take
I want you to journal right now over the number one thing you were doing to be in your own way. Next, circle one of the three solutions I laid out for you. Now it’s time to take action. Is it to get a coach or a mentor in that area? Do you have to get back in the Word? Is it to reframe this lie that you’re just speaking over your life and switch it from small problem to big picture? Now it’s time to commit and be disciplined in the action you take.
