defeat the enemy, strongholds and spiritual warfare
Hey Friend!
I have been in this season of being in my own way as my company continues to grow and expand. Even though we have had a phenomenal first quarter, we are experiencing growing pains. Some blessings come from the growth of our business, but it can still be hard to adjust to the changes that take place as the company grows.
There’s a constant struggle, a never-ending shift, but three things have helped me stop getting in my own way. I want to pass that along as you go through the ebbs and flows of running your online business.
How Are You Getting In Your Own Way?
How do you even know if you are in your own way? When I was in my own way, I was making excuses about why I had to get back to work, why I needed to finish this “thing,” why everything felt hard, and why there was this never-ending backlog of things to do.
We tend to make excuses for why everything is so hard. One of my big red flags is when the fleshly things are more important than the spiritual things. That’s when I know I’m in my own way. I don’t feel at peace in my life. God is not a God of confusion, and He is not a God of fear.
But if I am in a state of confusion and anxiety, then it must be self-created. I have to stop and look at why it’s happening, what narrative I have created for myself, and why I am leaning into it so much.
Steps To Stop Getting In Your Own Way
First, you must recognize that you are getting in your own way. Second, you have to have a healthy mindset. I like to stay focused on my priorities and setting boundaries. I can stay very disciplined and self-motivated. My team is my rock, and I have everything in place through them, but I still get it in my own way. If you feel the same, know you are not alone.
We become our own lid and the roadblock to the next level of success. It could be the negative thought that might block us from saying yes to something big or from taking the next right step. Typically, we overanalyze and get stuck in analysis paralysis mode. Don’t let these little roadblocks stop you or derail you.
Here is the beautiful truth: it will happen, and it’s OK because we have a solution to get out of it. We have to be able to identify it first. When I face a setback or problem, I see it as an opportunityto grow, not something that will take me out.
This is a significant perspective shift, and it’s having that flow mindset. You want to flow through it rather than stop in the middle of the tracks. Avoid the derailment and take it in strides. But first, you need to recognize it to get through it.
Step 1 to Getting Out of Your Own Way – Reframe from Small Problems to Big Picture
The first thing that helped me stop getting in my own way was reframing from minor problems to the big picture. Here is an example: many new things are happening within our team. We are onboarding many new interns, plus we have some other staff positions that are shifting around. We are in the middle of a lot of significant changes.
Sometimes, the middle is uncomfortable for me. Within the company, we have new positions we are trying to fill, extended SOPs are being built out, new tutorials are being made, and a lot of the pieces to the puzzle need to be put in place before the new round of interns come in. This is a small problem when trying to build a kingdom business. I could get overwhelmed with everything I have to do but also get excited about all the new positions I get to fill.
Look for Opportunities
I have to look at it as an opportunity. I’m shifting my mindset to see this as an opportunity to create more space within my company for growth. I’m creating more opportunities for people to learn how to grow their own kingdom business.
Do you see how we go from a negative to a positive way of thinking? When faced with a problem or a dilemma, ask yourself how to reframe that into a big-picture positive. Remind yourself that this is a small problem.
For example, you might say to yourself:
“I don’t fit in my pants. I feel overweight, so I’m going to go on a diet for the next 5 years.”
How do we reframe that into the big picture? You could say:
”I’m so excited that today is the first day of the rest of my life where I can be healthy. I’m so grateful that I get to go shopping and buy some healthy organic food. I’m looking forward to doing some meal prep time throughout the week.”
What is the opportunity? What are the big-picture positives that can come from this? Every day, write the answers down on a piece of paper, and before long, you’re going to train your brain and train your subconscious to look at things in a new light.
Step 2 to Getting Out of Your Own Way – Get Back Into The Word
The second thing that helped me stop getting in my own way is I got back in the Word. Having a morning routine that includes your Bible is so important. I spend an hour with God. I have been doing it for years, but this year has been the hardest.
I often feel like I am in a hurry to finish things. I think I have to get work done urgently, but I’m unsure why. The company is doing great; we have made more revenue this quarter than ever. The pressure I have is self-induced.
When I did a little self-reflection on what the difference is now compared to when I felt more peaceful in my business, I realized I was not in the Word as much as I used to be. We take care of our bodies physically with healthy eating and exercise, but we need to spiritually be healthy by staying rooted in the Word and opening the Bible more.
I pray all day, but I need to touch the pages of the Bible and get deeper into the Word. It’s so important to me to have a renewed mind as I go into my day. Before I speak to my kids, husband, and team, I need to get into the Word before recording a podcast episode.
If I didn’t get into the Word, I would probably not be in the highest frame of mind. It’s so important to enter our business from a position of spiritual fullness.
Step 3 to Getting Out of Your Own Way – Have Coaches and Mentors
The third thing that helped me stop getting in my own way was having coaches and mentors. I have been meeting with the spiritual growth mentor for 3 years. We keep having these breakthroughs yearly, and I get reinforcement that I need to keep meeting with her.
I believe that everyone needs guidance in some area of their life, and if God blesses that for you, you should continue to lean in on what God has provided for you. If you prayed about having a coach or a mentor, and he opens that door for you, and you feel the fruit come from it, then you should continue to move forward with what God has in store for you.
I have seen such exponential growth in my life from conversations with my coaches and mentors. Talking through things from a biblical perspective and praying with someone has been valuable. My coaches help push me to do things I don’t want, but I know it will help me grow.
Stop Making Excuses
My coach challenged me and asked why I was not in the Word. What’s going on? I could hear myself making excuses, saying things like I needed more sleep, I had lunch, things going on, and I couldn’t, I was tired, etc.
But think of it this way: if you know God impresses on your heart, get up and sit with him because time and space are so critically important for how you operate in your life. Why are you not making that a priority? My coach asked me that. She asks the hard questions to get me to move and do something better for myself.
Spiritual Changes Happen When You Are Rooted in The Word
Now that I am back in the Word, I’ve noticed an enormous change, and I’m not getting in my own way. Something important always sticks out to me when I’m in the Word. God tells me something I need to know. He’s speaking right to me through the scripture. He’s helping me prepare for what’s coming that day. My mentor and coach have been pivotal for me along this journey.
What area do you feel like you are in your own way? Take the time to invest in yourself. There have been times when I couldn’t invest in my own self. But when I could and invested in coaches, there was always fruit on the other side.
Reaching New Levels with Coaches and Mentors
As your business grows, you will need to continue to reach new levels, and the best way to do that is through coaching. God positions different coaches and mentors in my life based on where we need help. We are expanding the operations side of the business, which is not my strength.
I like to take big ideas and then take massive action on those ideas. I need a team to help me do that. Now, I have a team that I lead that consists of over a dozen people.
My coach explained to me that when you make a decision, it’s impacting your entire company. My coach helped me realize I need to work with my team to create different processes that work well together. I must stop being a bulldozer and be more mindful of big decisions. Hearing my coach tell me this helped me realize I was getting in my own way.
It’s OK to Wait and Sit in the Middle
I was pushing forward on good stuff, but I needed to wait and pause and recognize that we didn’t have to do everything yesterday. It’s ok to wait and sit in the middle. Stop pushing so hard and hustling and striving.
Instead, stay humbled in His truth that He is our Lord and Shepherd and that we have everything we need. It’s good to sit in His peacefulness and let Him lead the way. Stop feeling burdened and avoid feeling pressured to do everything yesterday. Let God lead.
My coaches have helped me understand this. I have had many coaches, from Spiritual and health coaches to operational business coaches and beyond. I am part of a mastermind that helps me grow in my business. I recommend you have the same.
Journal and Decide What Action You Are Going To Take
I want you to journal right now over the number one thing you were doing to be in your own way. Next, circle one of the three solutions I laid out for you. Now, it’s time to take action.
Is it to get a coach or a mentor in that area? Do you have to get back in the Word? Is it to reframe this lie that you’re just speaking over your life and switch it from small problem to big picture?
Now, it’s time to commit and be disciplined in your actions. If you need coaching, I invite you to come and check out Podcast To Profit, my six-month group coaching mastermind program for podcasters.
