This is a question I received from my student community about the question of monetization outside of where she is licensed in a particular area of the United States. It is such a great question for anyone considering how to make money with their podcast and whether they should start a coaching business.
Student Question: Should I Consider Starting a Coaching Business
Hi Stefanie. I am a student who has taken CYC and PPU. My podcast,The New Mom Doc, launched in April. I am a licensed naturopath in the state of Washington and I can see people under that license only in the state. I can do it virtually, but I can’t see people outside of the state of Washington. Is it appropriate for my podcast to target a specific location, or should I try to do something outside of my license like a coaching business that could have more reach internationally?
Starting a Coaching Business While Keeping Your License
Hey Friend! I am so excited for you to have started your podcast and be drilling into these questions around how you utilize your naturopathic skill set to expand your reach and grow.
Disclaimer: If you have some kind of license or certification, you definitely want to check with your state and/or licensing boards to ensure you are staying within your legal guidelines.
We have lots of people in this situation: licensed marriage therapists, health coaches, the counseling field, and more. You are not alone in asking this particular question.
How a Coaching Business Can Expand Your Reach
With your podcast, is going to come unprecedented reach. You’re going to log in one day and find you’re in 27 countries! It’s going to be kind of difficult to funnel people through this lens of “I can only help you if you live in Seattle.”
Of course, you can mention on your podcast, “If you are in the state of Washington, I can work with you in this capacity.” I do believe that it is really smart and it would behoove you to think about what a coaching business would look like so you have another avenue for everybody else. 99% of your listeners will be outside of the area where you’re licensed.
Look into how you can create something still in the naturopathic space; something more basic that can be coached without having to go through the certification hoops your current profession has for you.
That might look like a one-on-one coaching offer. It might also be an entry-level course in that specific pain point. Those are things I would do.
Should You Start a Coaching Business?
My answer is yes. I would probably begin to think about starting a coaching business while you grow your audience. Inside Podcast to Profit, you’re going to get all of this: when to start a coaching business, how to get clients, what price point, how to coach, what to call it, and more.
In this situation, think about how to put that coaching offer out there, adding that if they are in the Washington area, they can work with you in another way. Start there. As you meet with coaching clients, try to figure out what their number one problem is and what the solutions might be. That will become what your passive revenue offer could be in the future.
I hope that helps you!
