defeat the enemy, strongholds and spiritual warfare
Hey Friend!
Do you ever wonder if God wants to fulfill our dreams? That’s a great question that I think many of us have. While reading Psalm 105, I felt like God reminded me about our dreams. It felt like a direct word, where He highlighted some steps for me. I know that when I get a clear word from God I am meant to share it with you, so I hope this blesses you as much as it has blessed me.
God Fulfills Our Dreams and Scripture Confirms It
We know that God is a promise-keeping God. And we see it over and over again in Scripture. Abraham and Sarah could only dream of having a baby, and they had a baby in their old age. During this time, they were too old to have a baby, but God blessed them with one. David became king after so many years of running from Saul. God always keeps His promises.
Yet, we who are children of God still question the promises He’s given us. We question His promises in our businesses, our families, and any and everything we walk through. Also, we often question the dreams God planted in our hearts.
We wonder, is He really the promise keeping God? This causes us to worry about the future and question if our dreams will come true. A practical way to turn our doubt into faith is to read Scripture. Let’s look at Psalm 105 and see the truth about the promises God has for us.
Psalm 105:1-11
Give thanks to the Lord and proclaim His greatness. Let the whole world know what He has done. 2 Sing to Him; yes, sing His praises. Tell everyone about His wonderful deeds.
3 Exult in His holy name; rejoice, you who worship the Lord.
4 Search for the Lord and for His strength; continually seek Him.
5 Remember the wonders He has performed, His miracles, and the rulings He has given,
6 you children of His servant Abraham, you descendants of Jacob, His chosen ones.
7 He is the Lord our God. His justice is seen throughout the land.
8 He always stands by His covenant— the commitment He made to a thousand generations.
9 This is the covenant He made with Abraham and the oath He swore to Isaac.
10 He confirmed it to Jacob as a decree, and to the people of Israel as a never-ending covenant:
11 “I will give you the land of Canaan as your special possession.” (Psalm 105: 1-11)
Step 1: Your God Given Dream Starts With a Promise
Now that we’ve seen countless examples of promises kept in His word, let’s remind ourselves of the truth in Psalm 105: 8 “He always stands by his covenant—the commitment He made to a thousand generations. (v.8) This shows us that God is a promise-keeping God. Then, in verse 11, we see the promise God gave His people, which was that they would possess the land of Canaan.
For me, sometimes the promises God gives me come as a whisper from the Lord. Other times I hear the promise while journaling, or I receive a download from the Lord. This is when the confirmations start to come.
When I was seven years old I said I was going to be an author. I wrote it down as it was clear as day. I knew it was a promise from the Lord. For thirty plus years, I have run from this promise. I struggled with doubt and distraction. Because of my fears, I started to wander away from this one clear promise that He had given me at the age of seven.
Your Dreams Are Often Wrapped in Fear
What are the dreams that you have? They are often from God. Even after God gives us these dreams, we still wonder if He will fulfill them. We get trapped in fear, indecision, and doubt. But the thing is, the promises of God, the things we are called to do, are not comfy. They are the things that stretch us, grow us, and push us toward our future.
The people of God wandering in the wilderness were fearful and distressed even after they got their promise from the Lord. Psalm 105:12 says, ” He said this when they were few in number, a tiny group of strangers in Canaan.” My point is that He gave the promise when they were few in number. At the time, it seemed impossible to them, but God was with them all the time.
Step 2: After Hearing the Promise, You Will Start to Wander
After God gives you a promise, you will start to wander. This is all a part of the process.
13 They wandered from nation to nation,
from one kingdom to another.
14 Yet He did not let anyone oppress them.
He warned kings on their behalf:
15 “Do not touch My chosen people,
and do not hurt My prophets.” (Psalm 105: 13-15)
While they were wandering God was protecting them. How many of you are wandering through your dream or goal that God has given you? Sometimes we wander when we don’t think it’s possible, when we don’t think God will fulfill our dreams. Even during this time of wandering, God protects us.
Some things that I see in verses 13-15 are: God’s people were protected from oppression. God was fighting for them. Verse 15 was a direction from God to the oppressors that were going to derail His people. This shows the importance of obedience. These incredible people who were small in number were wandering around, trying to realize this big promise from God. All they had to do was move their feet. They were only given the direction and the promise, not the details. They just needed to trust God.
Step 3: You will be Tested on Your Journey
19 Until the time came to fulfill his dreams,[a]
the Lord tested Joseph’s character. (Psalm 105: 19)
“Until the time came to fulfill his dreams…” This Scripture shows us that Joseph’s dreams were going to come true, but only when the appointed time had come. Immediately after it was time for his dreams to be fulfilled, the Lord tested Joseph’s character. How often do you walk through an open door in your life, and then right away you start to feel the opposition come through? This testing is all part of the journey. Stay with it and push through.
My Personal Testing Story
Let me go back to my book example: I’ve been writing a book for two years with stories about my life experiences such as my childhood, trials and tribulations, and my salvation story. It’s a beautiful culmination of stories that I put together in a proposal. I shared the proposal with an agent who said my proposal was great, but there were some things I had to modify.
This was a test. I was discouraged for a whole month and didn’t do anything. I felt like it would be too hard, and I wouldn’t be able to do it. All of these doubts started to creep into my heart. But now, I recognize that God was telling me it’s about timing. It’s not that God won’t fulfill our dreams, but the dreams have appointed times.
God also confirmed His promise for me in the first line of Psalm 96:3. “Publish His glorious deeds among the nations.” While reading this, I felt in my spirit that God was confirming my dream to publish my book. And this was only two days after the agent said they were still waiting on me.
God will Speak to You in His Word
My point in sharing all this is that God speaks to you in Scripture. He will give you the clarity that you need. Read and study the Word. I heard the Lord loud and clear. Please know, you are not failing. Even if you are, keep on moving. There will be times of testing. You need to push through the fear. Push through the buts and the comfort zone mechanisms. Go from wandering to the path and march.
The time is here for your dreams to become realized. Yes, God does give us dreams. Yes, we are supposed to go forward and move on making those dreams reality. Because when we pursue the dreams of God, we bless God. We glorify Him through that. And all of those things are good.
Step 4: God Will Fulfill Your Dreams
The wrap up was absolutely beautiful. It says,
20 “Then Pharaoh sent for him and set him free;
the ruler of the nation opened his prison door.
21Joseph was put in charge of all the king’s household;
he became ruler over all the king’s possessions.
22 He could instruct[b] the king’s aides as he pleased
and teach the king’s advisers.” (Psalm 105: 20-22)
What happened in the final step was that God moved. The miracles that happened in Joseph’s life had to be from God. Pharaoh set him free, opened the prison door, and put him in charge of all the different facets of the kingdom. God finally fulfilled his dreams.
Recap: Are you Ready to Dream Big with God?
As a wrap up, let’s review the steps I saw in Psalm 105, and how that relates to God fulfilling our dreams. There is a journey that you will go on, starting with the promise God gives you. After hearing the promise, you will start to wander along the way and start to question if you heard God right, or if He really would fulfill the dream in your heart. This is the wilderness phase.
Then, as you go through trials and tribulations, you will go through a testing period. But God will protect you. This is the time when He is putting the different pieces in place so you can continue walking forward. Be patient, and wait during this time. You are almost there! You have to get to the other side of the mountaintop, through the hardships, in order to get the miracles and the open doors.
Then, the dream starts to become a reality. This is only on the other side of that testing. It’s part of the journey. The only fruit that tastes sweet comes from failure, moving forward, pressing in, trusting Him.
Your Turn: Bring Your Dreams to God
I really wanted to share this with you because at the end of the day, God does have a promise for you. He’s probably already given it to you and planted the promise in your heart. If He hasn’t, pray and ask Him. God, what are the promises and dreams You have for me?
Here’s your homework: read this chapter, sit with God and ask Him what dream He has for you. Listen carefully. Get in the Word. Lean into what He has to share with you. Then, you will wander in the wilderness, but keep moving. Be patient, and take a rest during the waiting. Take the next right step forward. Pursue this thing that will feel impossible. There will be setbacks and roadblocks as you press forward. That’s all on purpose. It’s all preparing you for your dream to be fulfilled when the time is right. God’s timing is perfect timing. He will start to open doors and fulfill your dreams.
