Six Things You Need to Start a Podcast

Let’s talk about the six things you need to start a podcast. I have lots of other episodes about this, but I want to really go through what exactly it is you need because it’s not just that you need some equipment. You do, but there’s a beautiful combination and collaboration of things you need for a podcast to be launched successfully.

Start a Podcast No. 1: A Concept

What is your podcast niche? You all know I’m very intentional about stretching my students to not just find a niche, but a micro, micro-niche. To whom are you speaking and what is your vision for your podcast?

Start a Podcast No. 2: Quality Microphone and Headphones

When I say quality, I don’t mean expensive. Headphones are actually optional. I prefer not to wear headphones, but I know a lot of people love having some headphones or earbuds. 

I use a Blue Yeti; it’s $100 on Amazon. You can even use your phone, if necessary. You just want to make sure you have some decent-quality equipment.

Start a Podcast No. 3: Recording and Editing Software

I use Audacity for podcast recording. There is a tutorial in Podcast Pro University on how to use Garage Band for all my Apple lovers. I have an Apple, but I use Audacity.

The software we use is Podbean. This is where we are hosting the podcast; which is actually number 4.

Start a Podcast No. 4: Hosting Platform

There are lots of options for hosting, but if you foresee yourself coming into the Stefanie Gass School – Podcast Pro University or Podcast to Profit – it’s probably best to go with Podbean because that is the platform my students use.

Start a Podcast No. 5: Podcast Artwork and Branding

I strongly encourage you not to make your own podcast art. Why? Because people can tell. When people decide who they’re going to listen to, they are making that determination based on a few things:

• Professionalism of your brand.
• Quality of your content.
• Your rankings and reviews.

It’s important that you take all of that into consideration when you create your show. One of the things you can control is the professionalism of your brand. 

Does your podcast art look clean and professional? If you have a photo of yourself, is it a professional photo or a phone selfie? Do you have fonts that don’t go together or aren’t cohesive?

You can always go to Fivrr too. They have a lot of options for professional-looking podcast art. Unless you are a graphic designer, I really encourage you to take this one seriously.

Start a Podcast No. 6: Distribution and Promotion Strategy

How are you going to distribute this podcast? How are you going to launch into the world?
