defeat the enemy, strongholds and spiritual warfare
Hey Friend!
Are you struggling to hear from God in your business? Perhaps you need to make a decision or are trying to shepherd your business, but you’re not clear on what to do. Should you pivot, stop, quit, or start over? You wish God would just send you a clear sign. You pray often to hear from God and see His hand over your business.
I keep hoping to hear His big, booming voice and for Him to answer my questions and lead me in my business. Friends, I desire to hear from God in ALL aspects of my life. As kingdom business owners, we need Him in the front seat of all our business decisions. We need to hear from God before we pivot or make any big plans for our business. But how do we do that, exactly?
If this sounds like you, you’re in the right place. I want to talk about how to hear from God in your business and your business decisions. Let’s dive into hearing from God in your business!
The Key to Hearing From God in Your Business
Here’s the truth, friends. You cannot hear from God if you’re not spending time with Him. The first step to hearing from God is creating intentional time to be with Him. If we don’t have intentional time with Him, we’re not carving out the space to hear from Him. All the busyness, distractions, and phones – it’s all white noise, and it’s drowning out your ability to hear directly from God.
If I can get outside on a nature hike or bike ride or hide my cell phone and carve out time to sit with Him, I will begin to hear from Him. It’s more of a direct line, too, because that busyness isn’t distracting me.
The reality is that the more you spend time with Him, the clearer His voice becomes.
Is It God’s Voice or Your Voice?
I’m able to discern a God whisper versus a Stef thought.
Was that God, or was that me?
Now that I have learned how God speaks to me, I listen and create intentional time with Him, not only in my business meetings and daily prayer but also in my morning routine. Even scripture reminds us that we have to slow down to hear from Him.
Psalm 46:10 says, “Be still and know that I am God.”
John 10:27 says, “My sheep listen to my voice, I know them, and they follow me.”
In order to create a real relationship with someone, you can’t meet them once and hope for the best. You can’t just call them on the phone and talk their ear off. If you want to cultivate a real relationship with someone, you speak to them and you listen.
You make time to get together with them intentionally. It’s no different here when you are making time to be with God. You want to learn to create that stillness, not just when you need something but because you truly are surrendered.
Five Ways that God Speaks in Business
God speaks in many ways, not just in an audible voice. Some people are truly blessed and hear from God in an audible voice. Some people get that inkling or that Holy Spirit feeling. The first way that many people hear from God is through scripture.
Hear From God Through Scripture
The Bible is God’s living word, and what it says will always align with His will. If a business decision contradicts the word of God in scripture, it’s not from God. The answer to your question is probably “no” if it doesn’t align with scripture.
For example, if you’re questioning a new partnership and ethical decision-making comes up, you can look at Proverbs for wisdom. You can also check ChatGPT and ask for specific Bible verses. Let’s say you’re looking at a new hire, investing, or starting a podcast. You can look up verses that relate by going back to the living, breathing word of God.
Hear From God Through Prayer
The second way God speaks in business is through prayer. Prayer isn’t just talking to God, it’s also listening. That’s the hardest thing for me, I love to talk! We usually pray and voice everything we need. We fall into a rut of saying the same things in our prayers time and time again.
If you can pause… and take a moment to let the Holy Spirit come forward and speak for us, Holy Spirit will intercede. Practice your prayer life, not just when you need something but all the time.
James 1:5 says, “If you need wisdom, ask our generous God and He will give it to you.”
John 14:26 says, “The Holy Spirit will teach you everything and remind you of everything I have told you.”
If the Holy Spirit will teach us everything and remind us of those teachings, we just need to surrender to letting the Holy Spirit lead. Sometimes, I think, “Great job, Stef! You’re awesome. What a great idea!” Then, I remind myself to take a seat and let the Holy Spirit take over. Jesus, take the wheel!
The Holy Spirit nudges us in the right direction. If an opportunity brings peace or excitement or aligns with the word of God, it’s likely from God, and we can walk forward. If something feels forced, rushed, unnatural, or unethical, that’s a warning sign. I call it a Discernment Alarm.
Stef’s Discernment Alarm
When I was using social media to grow my business five hours a day, I didn’t feel aligned with that, and I started to pray and lean into the Holy Spirit. I prayed and asked the Lord if there was a different way He was leading me to grow my business.
I got the confirmation I needed from Him that I was being led to lay down Instagram, and I got rid of it for two whole years! While I was off Instagram and not posting to socials, my podcast blew up and became a top podcast that started creating six-figure revenue. It is now what I teach other entrepreneurs to do – start and monetize a podcast!
I believe the Holy Spirit will always lead you, but it won’t always make sense.
We often think we have to do it the world’s way and show up how everyone else is showing up. The reality is, if we are building a kingdom business, we’re going to be different! We’re going to be called to lay certain things down that make no sense.
When I was called to give up social media and go all in on podcasting, it made no sense. I had lots of followers, and I was getting leads through Instagram.
When I laid that down and stopped capitalizing on my kids (praise Jesus!), I got serious about how I wanted to show up, which was long-form content. I wanted to lock in on podcasting first and grow that into a fruitful business before I stacked on other methods.
I had to make this first crazy surrender and be obedient to something that made no sense to me. But because it was Holy-Spirit led, and aligned with the word of God, I did it, and it was blessed!
Hear From God Through Wise Counsel
God often speaks through other believers, whether friends, small groups, or coworkers. God has spoken through some of my friends or people I’ve hired. Wise counsel is plentiful as long as we’re careful and discerning.
Be sure that you are praying over the wise counsel you’re receiving and that you’re taking it back to the word of God. If what people are saying to you doesn’t align with the Word, run!
You can always recognize something by the fruit it produces. Be sure you’re looking at the type of person, their lifestyle, and the result of the advice they’re giving you.
Proverbs 12:15 says, “The way of fools seems right to them, but the wise listen to advice.”
Hear From God Through Open and Closed Doors
God will sometimes make it abundantly clear that something is not for you. Friends, He will slam that door shut! If I’ve sought Him in prayer and consulted wise counsel, and nothing is happening, I go ahead and keep walking. But meanwhile, my prayer is, “God, if this is not for me, please SLAM THE DOOR!”
If I’m not sure I’m hearing Him correctly, I go ahead and move because trust requires movement, but I know that He might shut the door. However, sometimes, He opens the door for me after I pray that prayer.
Not every missed opportunity is a failure. Sometimes, it’s protection.
If you keep hitting walls, pause and pray. God may be redirecting you. Something I notice often with my students when they aren’t experiencing favor or their podcast is stagnant is this:
They’re not building the right business
They’re not being honest about their calling
If that sounds like you, go back to God and ask what you’re missing. Make sure you’re asking the right questions so He can redirect you.
So, how do you apply this in your daily life? Hearing from God isn’t just a one-time thing, it’s a daily habit.
It’s about being surrendered, choosing to pray, and being careful about your choices. I didn’t wake up and go straight to God every day in my business, it was something that grew inside of me. I cultivated it as a CEO who made the decision that God was going to be with me every step of the way. Intentionality is non-negotiable!
Proverbs 16:3 says, “Commit your actions to the Lord and your plans will succeed.”
Actions To Hear From God
So, what actions should you take to hear from God in your business?
Morning Quiet Time
For me, this looks like 30 minutes to an hour in the word of God. If His word is alive and breathing, I will prioritize that. I will give him the first fruits, not just financially, but the first fruits of my time. As for me, I’m best in the morning with a fresh cup of joe! How about you?
Pause Before Making Decisions
If you’re anything like me, you just run with decisions once they are made! In contrast, some of you are over-analyzers, and things take you much longer! You could fall on either end of this spectrum. This is about finding balance when making decisions. Take it to the Lord in prayer, pause and listen, and then move on it, allowing Him to open or close doors.
Journaling
This has changed my communication with God. I am always journaling. It allows me to focus my thoughts better and to slow down. When we’re sitting, we get distracted: we check our phone, we reheat the coffee, we lose the coffee (just me?). When I journal, I drop in and focus. Journaling helps me show up intentionally with God.
Listen
This is the hardest one of all. You have to stop and listen. Make room for the download, intercession, or revelation. We need to make room for God to move. We stay in motion and stay busy all the time. When we’re in this posture with the Lord, remember to be in awe of His holiness.
Play some worship music and ask Him to help you to be present. Slow your breathing, remove your phone, and diminish distractions. I love to be quiet with a notebook on my lap because God speaks to me through writing. Make that room for Him to speak and create the space so you can hear.
There Are So Many Ways To Hear From God
I’m not a pastor, I’m just a chick with a Bible and a hunger for Jesus! There are so many ways that God speaks to us. In fact, He may be trying to speak to you, but you’re missing it! I’ve grown a really successful company because of Him and that’s what I’ve been called to do and teach you all, as well.
I may not have mentioned everything here in this post, but I wanted to help you know what to be watching for as you grow your kingdom business.
Just to recap what we discussed on how to hear from God in your business:
Through scripture
Through prayer
Through the Holy Spirit
Through wise counsel
Through opened and closed doors
You can dive a bit deeper into some of these intentional practices to help you connect with Him on a deeper level. God is always speaking, you just have to listen.
