Hey girl, welcome to episode 162 of the show. Today, we are digging into how to make your titles super juicy, how to make your podcast titles, email titles and blog titles clickable and exciting and just really freaking good. Are you guys excited about this? I am so pumped. I think one of the most under focused on things that actually makes one of the biggest impacts is having titles that are clickable, that will convert.
(00:32)
I’m going to teach you today exactly how to do that with my strategy, my three or four questions you can ask yourself when titling your content, and you can follow this for every single title that you ever come up with in your life. I bet you’re going to see an increase in your clicks, your listen rates and your blog readers. Are you pumped? Let’s do it.
(05:00)
All right, let’s go ahead and move into struggling with titles. Raise your hand if you’re like, oh Stef, I sit here, I have the best content. It’s mapped out. I’m following your ISTC formula for content. Everything’s good. And then I stare at that title. I know it’s crazy, but let me make you feel so much better about this. There are really only three things we want to think about when we come up with a title for an episode.
(05:32)
Number one, can this title become juicy or controversial? Number two, can this title be keyword or SEO driven? Is this a tactical training episode where I can use keywords to get found? Or number three, can this title become a question or a trigger for my listener? Ooh, so good.
(06:04)
Juicy or controversial, SEO or keyword driven, or a question/trigger. All of my podcast and email titles and blog titles really fall into those three categories. So let’s go over to my podcast and look at my most listened to and clicked titles. Here we go.
(06:26)
The Truth About MLM Network Marketing and What Passive Income Really Means. The truth about network marketing. By the way, those of you who are like, oh my gosh, I need to hear that, it’s episode 88. That one is juicy or controversial, right? Makes you want to click.
(06:47)
Next, How to Start Coaching and Profit Immediately in Your Business. That is episode 129. That one is SEO or keyword driven. How to start coaching. So if somebody’s Googling how to start coaching, my episode is coming up. It also says, and profit immediately in your business. That piece is really a trigger because everyone’s wondering, well, how do I start profiting in this thing?
(07:15)
The next title that’s the most downloaded ever, Six Millionaire Success Habits You Need to Implement NOW. That is episode 122, Six Millionaire Success Habits You Need to Implement NOW. I think that’s really a blend of being juicy, controversial and then the third one, it’s a trigger too, right? Because we all want it. If you can make your avatar say, oh, but I want that, you know you got a winner.
(07:44)
And if you can use really great keywords like millionaire success habits, this title really has some of all three, which makes it a stellar title if I do say so myself. Six millionaire success habits. So that one’s really good. Next one. Here we go. Episode 127. Is It Time to Break Up With Instagram? Ooh, that one’s number three. It’s a question and a trigger. Is It Time to Break Up With Instagram?
(08:12)
You got to click this episode. You’re like, what? Break up with Instagram? Everybody’s telling me I have to use Instagram today, and Stefanie’s over here being controversial and saying, Is It Time to Break Up With Instagram? That is a very juicy and triggering question that I used as a title.
(08:29)
The next one is actually a coaching episode. Live Coaching, Creating an Avatar Plus Four Tiers of Brand Creation Plus More. So this one creating an avatar, I think that’s really why this one’s getting clicked. Because a lot of you hear me constantly talking about Lola and my avatar and you’re sitting there like, do I need one of those?
Who’s my Lola? What’s her name? So you guys are clicking on that one because I say creating an avatar, so this one is really probably keyword driven for all of you. Because so many of my listeners are like, I want to create an avatar.
(09:08)
The next one, Discover Your God Led Calling and Niche in Six Steps. Ooh, Ooh. This to me is a blend of number two. It’s SEO and keyword driven because I said, discover your God led calling and discover your niche. People are searching for that. But then here’s how I made it even better. I layered it, and I added a trigger in there. How do you discover it in just six steps? It makes you go, I need that, I want that, six steps? Oh yes. Me please.
(09:39)
So really, what you can see from these titles that I just shared with you guys, I don’t just pick one of my three criteria for a title. I’m layering it. If I can make a title juicy and controversial, and SEO and keyword driven, and a question or a trigger, you have got a winner winner, chicken dinner sister, and your title is going to get clicked.
(10:05)
So how do we do this for you? You really have to make it about your listener and your reader. If you’re like, who is my listener? Please go listen to episode 128 when I teach you about creating an avatar. Seriously, if you guys don’t understand who’s listening to you, then we can’t make titles that our human wants to click. You have to know, who are you talking to?
(10:31)
I want you to picture her face. For most of you, your avatar is a woman. I want you to understand. Is she a mom? Is she married or single? Working or at home? What type of demographic is she? Is she fancy? Weird? Is she wearing her PJ’s all day? Who is she? And then, what is she passionate about? What are the things keeping her up at night?
(10:53)
So when I’ve done this, I’ve said this to you guys so many times but again: if my woman is Lola and she’s trying to grow a soap business online and she’s struggling with all of that, she feels stuck. She does. She’s frustrated with Instagram. She doesn’t know how to make money in her business. She wants to start profiting immediately. Maybe she’s dabbling in network marketing. Maybe she’s dabbling in too many things and nothing is coming together in one cohesive brand.
(11:18)
All five of those episodes I just read to you are relevant to Lola. All five of those, she will be clicking on them. She’s struggling. She needs it. When I trigger her, I gift her some type of answer to her problem right there in the title, she’s going to click. And when I grab her attention in those first 60 seconds of that episode, she’ll be with me through the end.
(11:42)
She’ll be with me through the end so you guys have to do that for your business. If you have not done this and we are here on episode, whatever, 160 something, stop the madness, get out a sheet of paper right now. No better time than today to get clear. Map out: who is your avatar? What is she doing? Listening to? What are her triggers? What are the keywords that she’s searching for? Get inside her brain, get inside her heart.
(12:06)
Then you go create those podcasts. Episodes that solve those problems right now. You go think about it. How do I make her feel better, make her get clarity? Or how do I make her understand how to get from point A to point B, and serve her? And then you title it with juicy and controversial, SEO or keyword driven, and questions or triggers, and blend layer on layer.
(12:30)
An example of layering, let’s go to that episode that I read to you. Six Millionaire Success Habits You Need to Implement NOW. And NOW is in caps. This is episode 122. It’s juicy and controversial because I’m saying success habits you need now, like that’s juicy. It’s juicy. Then I use keywords in it. Millionaire success habits, millionaire success. Those are things that are searchable. Those are terms that I know someone out there is Googling.
(13:04)
The next one that I layered was a trigger. So it’s not a question, but it’s a trigger because I said you need to implement it now. I could have left it at six millionaire success habits and I would have had the first two of my three title criteria. But now I can make it even better by saying, you need to implement it now. I made it about Lola, talked directly to her. I pointed my finger at her. You need it now. Do you guys see how that works? So if you can layer, you’re going to have more success with titles.
(13:38)
Let’s look at another one that’s been layered. Episode 127, Is It Time to Break Up With Instagram? This is obviously controversial, very controversial. Does it have any SEO or keywords in Instagram? The word Instagram in and of itself is searchable. I wouldn’t necessarily say I used number two in this title though.
(14:01)
And then number three, it’s a question and a trigger. It’s a question. Is It Time to Break Up With Instagram? and it’s a trigger. Doesn’t that make you all wonder what’s inside that episode? If you haven’t listened to any of my episodes except for this one, go straight to 127 because I need to enlighten you on where you’re spending your time.
(14:22)
I’m gonna teach you today where we are not hanging out (Instagram) and where we are hanging out (Pinterest). Pinterest, which is episode 160. I’m going to change your life. I’m going to grow your business, scale your brand and teach you to stop wasting time on platforms that aren’t returning anything. Okay, that is totally a soap box. Let me rewind because we are not talking about that. We are talking about titles, but it makes me passionate when I read that title. You want to feel something when you read a title.
(14:54)
Is this making sense to you guys? Please swoop into my inbox on Instagram. Shoot me a voice DM, because I don’t type. Voice DM me and tell me if this makes sense. I want you guys to give me some title ideas in Instagram DM. Let me see what you’re coming up with and I will audit them for you. Give me three titles. I’ll audit them for you and give them back to you, okay?
(15:16)
So let’s go through a couple of examples that are not my podcast, just because I think it’s always great to have a visualization of what this might look like. So let’s say that you run a parenting brand, and you have this podcast where you’re talking about how to simplify parenting. It’s like parenting made simple, and your current title is Parenting Made Simple.
(15:42)
How does that make you guys feel? I feel pretty vanilla when I read that. I’m like, eh. So how can we make this juicy or controversial, SEO or keyword driven, a question or a trigger, or all of the above? Even better. Maybe something like…
(16:07)
Struggling With Parenting? Click Here for Five Secrets to Simple Parenting. Ooh, struggling with parenting. There’s your question. Click here is your trigger. For five steps to simple parenting. Oh, another trigger, simple parenting. You also have keywords in here. Parenting, simple parenting. Those are searchable. Boom. We have just made that title 100% better.
(16:39)
Let’s do this one. Maybe you run a podcast and you have an episode about organization as a mom. Maybe inside you’ve got like, you know, three systems that you use to become more organized and your current title is Organization Tips for Moms. And those of you that are like, oh crap. I have an episode named that. It’s okay. This is about today going forward.
(17:09)
Something I just told my mastermind girls is you guys, whatever we’ve done in the past, let it go. I am not going backwards and fixing all my janky stuff. Guys, let me raise my hand and tell you I have horribly titled stuff. I have links that don’t work. I have funnels that I don’t know where they go like, things are messy.
(17:29)
And you know what? It’s cool, beause it’s me starting right here today and I’m going to make strides tomorrow as I learn, as I grow, as I get more enlightenment, I can do things better tomorrow going forward. So give yourself some grace.
(17:46)
Don’t hate me if your title is called Organization Tips for Moms. It’s okay, but how can we make this better? Organization Tips for Moms, it kind of could be keyword driven like organization tips but that’s going to get lost in a sea of organization podcasts and blogs. So let’s think about how we can make this more juicy.
(18:11)
Maybe we can do something like Organization a Hot Mess? Step-by-Step Organization Hacks for Busy Moms. Well, now we’ve layered this title, okay? Because we have a question at the beginning, organization a hot mess? That’s also a trigger because hello, we’re all kind of, you know, unless we’re an enneagram one. You guys are awesome.
(18:34)
Organization, a Hot Mess? Step-by-Step Organization Hacks for Busy Moms. Now in that second one, we are now searchable because we have organization hacks. The word hacks is going to do better than tips. It’s going to do better than training because it’s more juicy.
(18:52)
And then we also plugged in busy moms instead of just moms. That’s another tier for her of triggering, really, because we’re all busy. We want simple. We want step-by-step. So this title is going to perform much better.
(19:07)
All right, let’s do one more visualization. Let’s say you run a podcast or a blog about sales for entrepreneurs, so you help people sell more, convert more. Your podcast episode is titled Sales Growth for Entrepreneurs. Not horrible. That would be okay. It’s definitely not juicy, but it is keyword driven.
(19:33)
Sales Growth for Entrepreneurs is definitely something someone might be searching for. But how can we layer it? How can we add another level of clickability? What if we took this to the next level? What if we wowed them with this title? Something like Increase Sales by 30% in 30 Days, Sales Growth Strategy for Entrepreneurs.
(20:01)
You guys feel the difference, right? Sales Strategy for Entrepreneurs, Increase Sales by 30% in 30 Days. Sales growth strategy for entrepreneurs. Holy smokes, I think we may have touched all three. We’ve got juicy and controversial because we’re saying increase sales by 30% in 30 days. That could be triggering because we’re all like, please, yep. Hello. Hi. Me.
(20:26)
We then also plugged in SEO or keywords by saying sales growth strategy for entrepreneurs that is definitely searchable, highly searchable. And we could make this even better by saying increase sales by 30% in 30 days. Make that a question mark. Boom. Increased Sales by 30% in 30 Days? Sales Growth Strategy for Entrepreneurs. That title has all three of our title criteria and it’s layered. It’s highly layered. That’s going to get click, click, click, click, clicked all day.
(21:01)
So ladies, here you go. What do we do as we walk away from this episode? We forgive ourselves for our cotton candy titling in the past and we really dig into these three title criteria, title criteria that I use going forward and we try to layer them as best we can. So here are the three criteria that you need to pick from when you are creating juicy, incredible titles for your avatar.
(21:30)
Actually, the number one thing you need to do is get clear on your avatar. You’ve got to know who she is, what she needs, what is she searching for? What are her hot buttons, triggers and search terms? That is not hard. It’s what are her hot points? What are her buttons? What is she Googling? Put yourself in her shoes and just get in her brain for an hour and brainstorm.
(21:53)
Okay, next step. Looking at an episode, I know what it’s about. I don’t title my episode first. I create the episode first. Then I dig into, what did this episode really do? What’s the ultimate promise of this episode? Pull that up, even if it’s cotton candy, like Organization for Moms. You’re like, okay, this is all about organization for moms. How do I make it better? Go through these three steps.
(22:16)
Step one: Let’s make it more juicy and controversial. Organization, a Hot Mess? Number two: See if you can infuse some search keywords that she might be looking for from your big list. Organization Hacks for Busy Moms, done.
(22:35)
Step three or criteria three: Can you make it a question or a trigger for her? Absolutely. Organization a Hot Mess? Step-by-Step Organization Hacks. Make sure that it makes you raise your hand and say yes, please. Make sure that it makes you question, ooh, what’s this about? Or, oh, that’s me. I need that or, oh snap. Is she really talking about that today?
(23:03)
Go back and maybe relisten to this episode again and think about what were my five most downloaded episodes. What do they have in common? They layered these three criteria. They at least had two of these criteria in every single title, if not three. Okay. There you go. I hope this helps you create incredible titles.
(23:25)
I have one more bonus tip for you. Bonus tip, whether you’re doing podcast title, blog titles, email titles, use my strategy. However, if you’re doing an email title, one thing I have learned is that my conversion, my click conversion goes up pretty drastically — I think it’s at least 20% higher — when I use an emoji. That’s your bonus tip for titling today. Only in email titles, okay? If you don’t have an email system, you can get started for free with MailChimp, and it’s totally fine.
(23:58)
I used MailChimp for years and it was great. I now use Get Response. You guys can actually see a list of every program I currently use to run my business at StefanieGass.com/resources. I remember that was the number one thing that held me back. I was like, well, which email platform and where should I build my website and what do I use for my checkout?
(24:24)
I update everything all the time. If I change something, I delete it. If I am not using something anymore, it’s gone. That is a current list of what I personally use to run my business. StefanieGass.com/resources. I think that will help you. So dig into this. Start creating juicy, amazing titles.
(24:54)
DM me with some titles and let’s dig into that. Praying over you, that you are excited about your business today, that you are doing something new, that you are giving yourself grace for things we didn’t do well in the past and know that. Let that go, let it roll off your shoulders because tomorrow is a new day and we can learn and we can grow and we can evolve. We can get better.
(25:30)
Every single thing we’re called to do in our business, God will provide. He will give you the people, the resources, the mentor, the courses, the episodes you need to hear, the friends, whatever you need, it’s right there. You simply have to get out of your own way and ask Him, and then take the steps, even when you don’t know how.
(25:47)
Find that bravery, tap into that. Holy Spirit, bravery, and know that God will equip you to go do big things, girl. You are here to do incredible, big things, and I believe in you and I know you can do it. I’ll see you soon. As always, love and light, Stef.
