How Rachel DeSonier Landed Clients Without Social Media

How did one of my Podcast to Profit graduates grow her podcast while raising five children as a busy mom? At the same time, she increased her podcast downloads by 18% (while decreasing her episodes), landed clients, and sold her first course, all without social media!

Wait, is that even possible? Yes, my friends, it is possible! 

Today, we’re going to dive into all that and more! We’re chatting with my former student, Rachel DeSonier, about utilizing my free content and jumping into my six-month group coaching program to grow a business without social media. We will discuss how she went all in and landed clients by implementing what she gleaned from my podcast and my six-month group coaching program.

Stef: Hey Rachel! Thanks for joining us today!

Rachel: Hey, thanks for having me!

Stef: I’m so excited that you’re here. Can you share with us your podcast and what you do? 

Rachel: Of course! I’m a registered dietician and certified personal trainer. I am also a mom of five, and I teach moms how to build confidence through simple strength training routines. 

Stef: How good does it feel to know what you do and be able to articulate it with such clarity? 

Rachel: It feels amazing! I was confused before, so it feels great.

Stef: Where were you in your business before Podcast to Profit? How did you find me? Could you walk us through the beginning? 

Rachel: I had a different business before my current business. I posted on Instagram daily and got on social media as much as possible. None of it was working. I was looking for inspiration because I felt burned out in my business. I was putting in all this effort and nothing was happening. 

This was a time in my life when I had to drive about two and a half hours a day to get my kids to all the places they needed to go. I told my husband the drive was really taking a toll on me, and he told me I should listen to some podcasts. So, I started listening to all the big-name business people, like Amy Porterfield. 

In one of Amy’s episodes, she talked about lead magnets. She said if your lead magnet wasn’t generating 100 leads per day, then you should probably create a new one. I thought, “100 leads?! I don’t even have two people on my list! How do I get there?” It felt so big and unattainable for me. My business at that time was a product-based business.

Then, you came up on the recommended list of who I should listen to next. I’ll be really honest: I wondered if it was going to be “fluffy” because you’re a christian. 

Stef: [Laughter] Oh, that’s so good to hear! I love it. 

Rachel: But I decided to check it out, and I think that was the Holy Spirit leading me. I listened to an episode and found that it was really helpful! My product-based business was location-specific and I was losing steam. 

I had worked as a dietitian, became interested in strength training, and had this big transformation, so I realized I could teach people how to do this, too! Listening to your podcast inspired me to formulate this new business without social media. A podcast was the way to do it!

Rachel: That was the fall of 2023, and because I drove so many hours per day, I listened to ALL of your episodes. I decided to do the things you said to do on the podcast. You provided so much value. You said to do five coaching sessions, so I did just that. Because I worked as a dietitian in a clinic, I was already familiar with how to coach people. I wanted to join Podcast to Profit and this was the way to get started. 

We had six kids (we were fostering one child at that time) under age nine. I knew I wanted to enjoy this experience, and not be sleep-deprived and stressed while taking the course. So, last fall I decided to go for it, and I used our tax refund to pay for it! 

Stef: So smart! 

Rachel: Then I worked on coaching. I did exactly what you told me to do in your podcast and practiced pitching my podcast. I really wrung your podcast out dry!

Stef: At this point, you felt led, found the show, and binged the podcast. This is what I teach you to do in Podcast to Profit! You came into my world through the podcast, listened, and started to believe in me. This is exactly what I teach you to do, as well! Then you decided to join the group coaching program well before you jumped in. Do you remember why you chose to join Podcast to Profit? 

Rachel: Because of my previous business experience, I knew you could get me where I wanted to go faster. Your program is a complete business in a box. Not just a course on email marketing or creating a course – it’s everything! I was getting results just from your free content. I made actual money from the free value you gave me! If I can do this with free content, how much more will I grow with guidance?

Stef: So good! So you were seeing the fruit from the free stuff. Your barrier to entry was two-fold:

1. Time – with six kids, driving and activities
2. Financial – the need to save up, and eventually use your tax refund

Would you agree those were the two main constraints? And how did you overcome the time constraint? 

Rachel: I knew that this season of my life was hectic and out of my control, but I knew that the fall season would allow space and time. I knew exactly what I wanted to do with that time. I’m a big planner and if I set my sights on something, and I know it’s worth the investment, I will do it. 

That’s the approach you have to take – I wasn’t playing around. I had tried all the things! I believe your program works because I’m seeing positive momentum already. 

Stef: I love that so much. Then you decided to join! Tell us about it. What was that experience like for you? Take us behind the scenes!

Landing Clients Without Social Media: A Step-By-Step Approach

Rachel: I was so excited to join and my husband was so tired of hearing me talk about it! What I love is the week-by-week approach you take. This is the right approach for people like me, who hate feeling overwhelmed!  

I think back to receiving a class syllabus in college, and how I felt like I would have a panic attack at the beginning of the semester seeing everything up front. I love the step-by-step approach you implement. 

Also, your coaches were incredible! It felt like being at school again where you submit your work for someone to check over. Sometimes they would ask me to do my work again, and that’s what I need. That’s what I’m paying for! I’m not here for someone to stroke my ego. All that constructive criticism (which wasn’t a lot – they are so kind!), was really helpful for me.  

Finally, I built a complete course while enrolled in your program and started Pinterest marketing and blogging. You cover all the bases and are so detailed! All the other programs I looked at were so high-level and advanced. I needed something that would meet me at the beginning, and that’s what your program did.

Stef: Do you feel like you were able to accomplish more in six months than you thought possible? 

Rachel: Yes.  

Stef: Building out a course without help is so hard. There’s so much strategy that goes into that. Who knows how long that would take without help? We move quickly in the program because we have one week of work at a time, but what that does is it gets you to focus on ONE thing (i.e., email marketing) and that one thing only.

It’s like a mini course each week. Because I’m doing it that way, you perfect and optimize every aspect of your business at the end of six months. And then you’re selling and making money. It blows my mind what you can accomplish in six months. 

Rachel: I was so shocked about the course piece, specifically, and the high-level process you took us through. The coaches were guiding us along the way. I didn’t have to be frustrated with the little details. It showed me exactly how to build it, step by step. 

Stef: Like, what software do I use? We remove all of that confusion for you. 

Rachel: Exactly! It saved me so much time. I’m built out and it’s done! My work week now is 15 hours. I even have time to read a book! 

Stef: Heck yeah! Imagine, time to read a book? Rachel is so busy! She’s in the busiest season of mom life, and now running a business. Let’s talk about that! Was Podcast to Profit worth it? Tell me what the outcomes have been from this program.

Rachel: Let’s back up just a bit. I dropped down from two episodes to one episode per week. I needed a little breathing room from building a giant course with 22 modules. 

Even though I dropped my episodes by half, my followers increased by 18% and my downloads per episode increased by 15%. I did everything you said to do with my podcast. Everything increased, even though I was doing fewer episodes. The little tweaks you had me do increased my followers. 

Rachel Landed Clients By Doing Less

Stef: If you’re doing two episodes per week, and take one away and increase your downloads, you’ve actually doubled your downloads! That’s insane with only one episode per week. Talk about simplicity and being able to let go of extra stuff! How long does it take to do one episode – outline, record, and edit?

Rachel: 45 minutes. 

Stef: Oh my gosh, you guys! How long did you used to take, per day, trying to get clients through social media? 

Rachel: Oh my gosh – hours! 

Stef: Yes, hours per day! It just kills me. 

Rachel: I have never used social for this business because I realize it doesn’t work. One of the biggest things that drew me to you was when you said, “I have a peaceful business.” That’s what I want, a business that doesn’t overtake my life. 

I love being an entrepreneur, but that’s not all I have going on. Knowing what to do daily and knowing it’s making a difference is so amazing. I don’t have an Instagram account for this business, yet it still makes money!

Stef: Tell us about that. What’s going on with the money, clients, and course you built? 

Rachel: I see four clients regularly – weekly or every other week. That’s consistent money! It’s not like I’m making $10k per month yet, but I know I can get there! 

I just launched my new program, which is a 12-week fit lifestyle creation program. In this program, I walk you through how to strength train to lose fat, and how to do it consistently. I launched and sold a program – I made a sale on a thing I made from a podcast!

Landing Clients Without Social Media: Give It Your All

Stef:  Now you landed clients, you’re making money, and things are growing. I can relate so deeply to what you said about a peaceful business. That is all I never knew I wanted when I was growing my business the world’s way.

I was burned out, frantic, overwhelmed, and frustrated. I can’t believe this is my life and business now. Who knew this was possible? Tell everyone on the fence about Podcast to Profit and how they will know it’s worth the investment. What would you say to them right now? 

Rachel: I would say if you really want results, if you want to grow your business in a way that isn’t full of hustle, and be more present for your spouse and kids, then do it and do it to the full. Don’t try to juggle it while focusing on other projects and not make it a priority.  I did it 100% and it’s working.
