Overcome the 3 Reasons You Haven‘t Started Your Podcast Yet

In today’s episode, I go through 3 reasons you haven’t started your podcast yet, and how to overcome them. I go over how these reasons might be keeping you from true exponential growth. I explain how to mitigate these fears, excuses, and obstacles so that you can let go of all the things that aren’t helping you GROW.

Hi friend, happy Monday! I hope you had a great weekend today. We are going to be talking about three reasons why you have not started your podcast yet, even though you want to, even though you know that you’re being called to do so and even though you know it’s the easiest way to scale a passive business because your audience is going to continue to come in one to many.

You get to show up behind a mic, braless and flawless, in your PJ’s girl with your coffee and spit behind the microphone while your business grows behind the scenes. However you haven’t taken the leap. You haven’t done the thing. Today I’m going to talk to you about why that is and how to fix it. We’re going through the three reasons you have not clicked record.

Okay, here you sit. You’ve been listening to this show for what? Couple of weeks? Couple of months, a couple of years, anybody? Oh man. And you still have not taken the leap and starting your show. You’ve heard me talk about how podcasting was the absolute catalyst to this business. To me having a thriving coaching career, and then a thriving course, a suite of courses that sell every single day, running an amazing mastermind program three, four times a year that sells out.

Why? Because it allows me to be heard all across the world. It allows me to record thing for you guys. Okay. And then that one thing gets published on all these different podcasting platforms and the SEO and marketing work for me, people search for my keywords, people search for my topics and it brings them to the show. And because I know all of the ways that you can scale your podcast passively, right?

Number one, the first thing is that you’re just unclear. You do not have clarity. That truly is the reason that so many of you have not started a show yet. You’re like, I don’t know what it would be called or what the episodes would be about. I’m unclear. I don’t know what my content pillars are. I don’t know who my person is. I’m not sure if my person has a number one problem. What is their number one problem? What would I title my stuff?

I don’t understand any of these little pieces, therefore, because I don’t have clarity I will stay stuck. I am choosing to stay where I am because I’m unclear. Raise your hand. Anybody have the unclear syndrome? Anybody lacking clarity, raise your hand. You are not alone. I will let you know a few things.

Not having clarity is a choice because I can give you clarity. That is why I created Clarify Your Calling. Post in some Facebook groups, ask some questions, get on the phone or on Instagram DM, messenger or zoom with five different people and pick their brain around your topic.

This is going to give you confidence that your topic is needed. It’s going to give you confidence about the episodes that you want to create, because you’re going to hear from your person what they actually want, what they need and the words that they are saying that will help you have belief in your clarity.

And then the other thing is clarity is and evolution. So even though you may have a semblance of clarity and you’re like, I’m not sure it’s going to take you stepping out and taking action for that clarity to become defined, for the Is this podcast a hundred percent right? You’re not going to know that until you actually start podcasting.

Is my avatar who I think they are? You are not going to know that until you start building an audience. Is this going to make me money? How are you going to know that unless you start and you build an audience. So clarity is dead without action. So the other piece of this puzzle is once you’ve gone through CYC and you have all those clarity pieces, you’ve done some market research, you actually have to leap and you have to just go.

And implementing that action is going to continue to fine tune your clarity work. It’s going to clean up your messaging. It’s going to give you confidence. And it’s going to build a business. Over time that yes, maybe you tweak. Yes. Maybe you even rebrand later on. I didl guys. It’s okay, because clarity is a constant evolution.

And even if you start today with 100% clarity, you’re going to change. You’re going to grow. God’s going to do a work in you, through you for you, for others. And you’re going to have some tweaks. I promise you, there is never a finish line here. It’s all a journey.

(11:22):

Number two, the second reason that you have not started your podcast yet is you’re overthinking the how’s. You’re stuck in the perfectionism paralysis that takes over so many people’s lives and steals from so many entrepreneurs. Okay? Raise your hand if you’re guilty of this one. Overthinking the how’s or the perfectionism paralysis. I don’t know about you. I know I found myself here before.

This one is because I don’t understand the tech and it’s too overwhelming. I can’t click record because editing seems to be so scary and it must take so long. Spoiler, It doesn’t. I shouldn’t do this. Oh my goodness. Or gosh, until I get the coaching certificate, until I take a speaking class until I get an, you know, an MBA in podcasting, I can not start a podcast. It must be perfect, it must be exactly right.

(12:24):

Well, I’m here to tell you that perfectionism is an absolute lie. Okay? It’s a stealer of joy and success. It’s a stealer of progress and clarity. Also, it’s a stealer of financial gain and prosperity. It’s a stealer of God’s favor over your life because we are imperfect. We are imperfect humans and we will never be perfect. The only perfect person was Jesus Christ.

(12:50):

And I’m sorry to say, we are not perfect. We will never be perfect. And we need to accept our imperfectness because when we show up in our imperfections, it allows other people to see us as real. It allows other people to resonate with us, you know, you guys like it when I mess up, when I share when I’m struggling with something, because it makes me relatable and you feel like you can tell me what’s really going on with you. And you also feel like if Stefanie can overcome that thing, maybe I can too.

(13:22):

So allowing us to show up in perfectly messy, awkwardly, without perfect podcast art, guys, I have had like four or five different arts by now. Like come on the first art I ever started my show with was so ugly. I created it in Canva myself with an iPhone photo that I didn’t even know how to put a filter on at the time, bad lighting, a really awkward clip art. You know what I mean? Like there’s no one in here listening to this episode right now that would ever possibly have worse channel art than what I started with.

So if I can click start with a $20 Amazon microphone that was super staticky and really busted channel art so can you. And look, my show has over half a million downloads at this point and it’s exponentially growing every single month. And it started off scrappy. It started off a little questionable. You know what I’m saying? Like I also started not really knowing any tech whatsoever.

I started off not being sure of how to properly edit, not being sure how to fix the sound. But the beauty is all of that is in PPU for you, guys. It was worth it. Every investment I ever made in my business has returned infinitely more than the amount I wasted trying to do this myself.

I try to be an entrepreneur by myself for way too many years. If I had just gotten intentional about following the right mentors and the right coaches and investing in the right programs from day one, I would have had the kind of success I have now five years ago, right? Like we have to let go of control. We have to let go of the purse strings.

And we have to realize that God will provide the resources for us to create the revelation for Him. To create kingdom change, to step up into our purpose and our calling work, He’ll open the doors for that, but we have to trust it. We have to let go so that we can let Him in. So that’s that one, number two is you’re just overthinking it. You’re stuck in perfection paralysis. And all of the answers for that one are letting go of control, investing in yourself so that you have the tools and resources and taking Podcast Pro University.

Literally, my podcasting course does not tell you to go buy $2,000 equipment. It does not tell you that you’re going to spend hours and hours promoting on social media, 24 7. It’s the opposite of all of that. It’s how to create a podcast and a couple of hours or less per week and let go of every other marketing channel, unless you just want it.

It shows you how to have inexpensive editing or do it yourself super quickly. I show you some hacks for that or not edit at all, which is my absolute favorite. I don’t really ever edit unless it’s a coaching episode. You don’t need expensive equipment. I teach you how to have inexpensive equipment that truly really works. And I’m here about doing this scrappy. I’m here to do this affordably for you.

(16:52):

And I’m here to show you how to get rid of perfectionism because messy is where the beauty happens. Messy is where the transformation lives and it’s where trust is built. You got to get over that part. You’re going to do this messy and you will fail and you’re going to fail forward. You’re going to fail forward so you can flourish.

(17:11):

Number three last but not least. The reason you have not started your podcast yet is you’re afraid of failure. You’re afraid of judgment. You have fear of man hanging over your head and your heart and you are just terrified of publishing. Raise your hand if this is you. I know I have multiple students who will talk to me about this and say, I am just so dang scared. What will my coworkers think? What will my family think?

(17:42):

What will they say about me behind my back? What if no one listens or I have to quit? Because it fails. All of that is a culmination of what if’s that are based on a reality that’s unseen. If you ran your life by worrying about things that had not happened yet and probably will never happen, you would literally do absolutely nothing. You would never go to school. You would never get a job, or have a baby.

(18:13):

You would never get married. You would never go to church. You’d never believe in God. You would just sit there like a little bean. I don’t know why I picked a bean that never grows, a seed that never grows that never gets watered. That never blooms. Like you’re just sitting there. You stay a seat in the package, your entire life. Like, do you want to be a seat in a package? Or do you want to be a flourishing, beautiful, blossoming plant garden, something amazing.

(18:38):

I am telling you the fear is a liar. The Bible says fear is a liar and fear is not from God. So any fear that is keeping you from stepping out and doing this show is actually just a lie from the enemy. And the great news is we get to smash the lies from the enemy and we get to partner with God’s truth. And God’s truth is that you are called, you are equipped. You are beautifully and wonderfully made open your mouth and he shall fill it.

(19:11):

He will give you the words. You are embodied by confidence, power and anointing through the holy spirit. The moment Jesus died on that cross, he said it is finished. Fear is finished, right? So you, all you have to do is believe that God is going to equip you to bring your message into the world. All you have to do is open your mouth and trust that he shall fill it. All you have to do is pray protection over your heart and your mind.

(19:43):

And here’s something else. Here’s just some raw truth for you to take to the bank. People don’t really care what you’re doing. I know this is hard to swallow. People don’t really care about you. They don’t care about me. They don’t really care because they’re so focused on themselves. People are so distracted today. People are so egocentric. What’s in it for me. How has this affect me? And if it doesn’t affect me, I don’t really care about it. Do you really care about it?

(20:12):

So worrying about what Joe Schmoe at work is going to think about your new podcast cause you talk about God or because you talk about being a mom, whatever you talk about becoming a life coach like Bob probably doesn’t even notice what you’re doing, number one. He definitely doesn’t care. And if he listens, he’s probably going to think you’re awesome and courageous for doing it. And if he doesn’t bye Felicia or bye Bob. Like I don’t really care what you think because I’m doing it anyway because I have a calling to do it.

(20:43):

And here’s the other really cool part guys. The second thing has come to, they have no more power over you. So you sitting here in this fear and letting it keep you from saying yes, that’s, what’s keeping the power, this unseen power, this unseen hand, keeping you from doing this. You’re giving fear power by not just doing it.

(21:05):

The second you click record and publish your first episode, all that power diminishes your fear dissipates. And you realize that everybody’s cheering for you, guys, until you hit a million downloads, maybe half a million people aren’t hating on you because they’re the people that care about you. They’re the people that love you. And by the time you hit half a million to a million downloads, you’re going to have a really thick skin.

(21:27):

Believe me, guys. I remember so clearly when I was going to publish my episode about getting my breast implants removed. And I was so terrified to talk about that. And I thought, oh, I can’t do it. I was so afraid. There was so much fear. What’s everybody going to think they’re going to judge me. They’re gonna quit listening to the show.

(21:46):

I just ripped off the band-aid and recorded the episode. I shared all about the story, I shared about having them for 13 years. Why I removed them? The like how God convicted me to remove the breast implants. I have a whole episode about that. And what happened? The opposite of what I thought. Nobody was hateful towards me.

(22:05):

Everybody was encouraging and loving my podcast like blew up because everyone was so excited to hear about this story. They were, it was just like, there was so much power in me pushing through the fear and posting something vulnerable and scary. And so, I have a feeling that your first few episodes are not nearly as controversial as that. They’re probably very positive. Your first episodes are just not that that’s not positive, but they’re probably very encouraging.

(22:33):

They’re probably a little bit high level. Cause you’re introducing your new show. So there’s nothing to be afraid of. So, there’s nothing to be held back from, open your mouth and He shall fill it. And also, that third one, we are throwing that out.

(22:48):

So let’s recap. Three reasons you haven’t started your show yet. Number one, you are unclear. You don’t have clarity. We’ve solved that problem. And last but not least, you’re afraid of failure. You are stuck in fear. You are consumed by concern over judgment of man. And that one, we just have to look to scripture. We look to scripture and we see that we are called. We are chosen and we are equipped. And that means, it is finished. You’re going, you are pressing play. You are doing this. It is time. I am so excited for you. I can’t wait.
