Hey, Lola, what’s up girl. Welcome to episode number 116 of the show today, I am doing a strategy session with one of my Podcast Pro University students, Stephanie, and you’re going to hear all about her struggle with what the heck should my brand be. When I do something today, that makes me money and I enjoy it. And it’s my zone of genius. However, my passions are over here in a totally different sphere. Is there a way to pair the two? And then how can we monetize that? You’re going to love this. And I think this will help so many of you because almost every one of my Lola’s that DMs me shoots me an IG, does a coaching session with me. The biggest struggle is what’s the thing, Stef, how do I get a niche?
(00:48)
How do I zone in on what the heck to do when I love so many things and sister, I feel you you’re going to absolutely love this episode. This review was left on my Facebook page by Michele Harkins, who says, Stef took me from hot mess to focused fireball. Our coaching call literally changed my life. She is a strong leader, not afraid to say the hard stuff. Her brain works in a way that is a true gift from God. I am thankful to have tapped into that. I look forward to many more sessions. Thanks, Michele. I am so rooting for you. Love you Sis.
(02:13)
And Hey girlfriend, do you need a strategy or a full on breakthrough session with me? Let’s do it. There is no better time than right now to get set up for success in 2020, I can help you zone in on your thing. I can help you map out an online course. I can help you clarify maybe if podcasting is right for you and a strategy to grow and scale your brand online. Okay. That is what I do. And I love it. And I want to help you get unstuck. Seriously, go to stefaniegass.com/workwithme and let’s chat. Okay. Girlfriend. So let’s talk about, give me your main questions.
(02:50)
Like, what do you want to solve right now? My thing is that I’ve been doing this a couple of years, like the online VA type spaceish thing. Since I’ve kind of started, I’m like, you know, I’m at the point, where do you do the online service provider route and try to scale that in whatever way that I can, or is it something, is there something else? And I do the service provider thing, like you were saying in the episode I was listening to earlier like doing this thing for now while I build another business for whatever it is I’m passionate about.
(03:25)
So whenever you talk about passion, one of the things, and I have like a couple of notes was how do you know? So if you feel like maybe your passion isn’t specific enough or it’s maybe kind of too generic, or if you don’t feel like you may be like, sometimes I wonder like, do I have that true passion for something? Or is it that I’m multi-passionate, or not passionate enough. You know? I mean, you hear all the time, people using the word, like passion and they’re like, I jump out of bed in the morning and I can’t wait to go to work. Is that true? Or like, sometimes I’m like, Oh, why am I, why don’t I have that? Like, why don’t I feel like that?
(04:03)
So are you’re doing full time podcast management, right? Is it full-time? Yes. So I was a realtor for six years before, and I still have my real estate license, but the last couple years I’ve primarily been doing this. Okay. When you think about yourself a year from now, okay. And you’re like, Oh, I’m literally living the dream life what comes through for you? If, even if it’s not work-related, you’re sitting in the position you want to be sitting in in a year, what does your day look like? What’s different about where you sit today. Would I love to make $50,000 a month and blah, blah, blah. Of course, that’s not what I’m not saying, but like, I would love to just have a stable income.
(04:49)
Real estate was never stable, a stable income. Just consistent good money. And the reason that I want, you know, financially is for things like we want to retire early, I’m married to a CPA. I know you’re a controller. Yeah. We have it. Like, we want to retire early. We want to travel within the next couple of years. My husband’s like trying to set himself up with his business to be able to do that. So we have kind of those goals. And so with that being said, I see my business now where I’m a solo preneur and don’t have anybody to really help me. I’m kind of working around the clock and I’m like, how would I travel? Like even prepping to go to Disney World next week is stressful. I mean, I’m working at night.
(05:36)
That sounds good. You want stability is what I’m hearing from you. What about time? That’s where I want. Like, just like you were kind of saying, so I would love to be able to work only within like, not only, but mostly within the like nine to two while my kids are at school and then be off and present with them after, like that would be my dream to have more time with my family. That’s kind of my thing. Like I don’t want to work around the clock. And so as I see my business grow, I’m seeing, that’s what it’s turning into. And I’m like, ah, I kind of worked less hours in real estate and made about the same amount of money. Like sometimes I think why don’t I just go back to that? You know?
(06:13)
Then why don’t we look at passive products for you or a passive strategy. And I think there is the thing, Steph, like there is the thing and yes, we can be passionate about so many different things and be good at so many different things. But we have to dig into the root of the what’s the core denominator between them all. Okay. Okay. So if I was to ask you, what are the things let’s say the top things that you’re so excited and passionate about, whether or not they make you money, what comes to mind and don’t think about it, just spout out, whatever comes in. What do you love, what would you do if you didn’t get paid for it? What are your passions?
(06:55)
One of the things, and while I’m not a clean freak, I’m a neat freak. So I love, and I just like design and things to be like orderly. It makes me happy. Like I love to, you know, whenever my kids leave in the morning, it’s a disaster. I love nothing more than to turn on Alexa for 20 minutes and clean up the entire house. And it’s spotless. Like, you know what I mean? Like I saw your Instagram storey, you know what I mean, that’s how I am. I do love that level. And I love organization not to the extreme craziness organization, but I have always been one of those like way back in the day I was a scrapbooker.
(07:30)
And I mean, everyone says, whenever you say, what does everyone say you are? Everyone says, Oh my gosh, you’re so organized. Okay. So like, and yeah, and you know, I am good at design and that kind of thing. And, but I like things to be kind of neat and orderly, but I guess like simple, simple things. I mean, I’m not like a minimalist by any means, but I don’t like a bunch of junk and decluttering and that with the same with my business and life. So just it’s that ease of like keeping things simple and not, I don’t know. I’ve been on this huge, like personal development journey of like less stress, less, you know, all of those kinds of things, like over the past couple of years.
(08:10)
Like my morning routine and I get up and pray and I do your journal and I do all that kind of stuff like in the mornings and like, that’s my time. And I love that. And I love the idea of like, you know, waking up with my kids and being present with them and that kind of a thing. What if it was like the minimalist mama, so, okay. That’s where my brain wants to tell you to go. But let’s first look at the money right now today. So you’re making money, doing podcasts. I do full service podcast management. So all of the stuff like you teach in your course, all of that kind of stuff. And then I outsource the editing at this point just because I’ve gotten busy enough.
(08:45)
So amazing. So let me ask you, do you want to keep that long term or is that a means to an end for you? I have thought about this question a lot. I have a lot of ideas as far as like how to monetize the podcast. Like, you know, everyone’s like create a course, create it and I’ve thought about even like a podcast management course, something like that. But like how many podcasts managers can I teach to do podcast management? I don’t know if I feel like that. I know they can’t see me, but I’m like stop the phone. Listen to me. Okay. Podcasting has exploded. Podcasting is exploding . And here’s the crazy piece that I’m kind of thinking about.
(09:40)
If you don’t want to be doing podcast management, why not package this up? Because do you know how many women, the number one problem right now is I’m a mom and I want to work from home. Oh my gosh. Right? And what are they, what do they want to do? MLM? Which is, we already know that’s probably not the right solution for 99% of people, but doing freelance work from home editing shows around your kid’s nap times getting up an hour early amen, they could be charging 30 bucks an hour to start potentially. And so if you have this key for her to say, simply sister, let me just show you how to do the podcast management side, or even just the editing side and starting a freelance business.
(10:24)
You could package that up as a course, Steph, and then you’re done cause it’s already built. And then what I was thinking, your brand is built around potentially the minimalist mom, something like that, where you get to talk specifically to the mom who probably wants to work from home and monetize your entire show with, have you ever thought of working from home? Do you want to know how I was able to build and scale a business from my computer? Let me introduce you to, you know, podcast management productivity system or whatever you want to call your mini course, teaching them how to become a podcast manager. It all would potentially fit.
(11:01)
You know, I was struggling with. And just like you saying how you kind of put your two things together and made one thing, and that’s where I’ve struggled with. It’s like, when do you completely say no to podcast management and yes to this thing? Or is there a way to put the two together? And that’s what I was talking about with as far as like, not being specific enough in it, like with the productivity, like you kinda, you know, there’s so many people that teach simplicity and productivity and organization. And so I wasn’t sure if I wanted to like go that route or if I bring podcasting into that somehow. So that’s kind of where I was getting stuck, meshing the two.
(11:34)
And I don’t think it’s bringing podcasting in. It’s bringing in a solution for the mom to work from home. So I think your brand, Stephanie, if we went this direction, which it feels really in alignment for me, but you just have to get there mentally to say, if you’re talking to probably in Enneagram one or three mom, okay. She either does work from home already. Maybe she’s a network marketer, she’s a freelancer, or you’re teaching her systems to simplify systems, to minimalize and become minimalish, right? Organization hacks, productivity hacks, and PS. There is a way for you to make money from home and your solution for that is to be a podcast manager. And that’s what you teach.
(12:18)
I think that’s a wonderful solution for so many moms that are going to be listening in on your show. And that gives you more variety too in the future, because you have that solution right now, you could package that up. In one month you have a course for her, but you can grow from that too. And you could say now, awesome, I’m going to create this productivity guide or like you can grow in whatever direction you want that provides that a type personality mama solutions in her household and business.
(12:50)
So you would be essentially talking to the same person. How do you start talking about your love of organization and simplification and minimalization over here while I’m also supposed to be, you know, trying to talk about podcasts management, scaling my podcast business. Do you want to scale that stuff because don’t you have a good base right now? Yeah. Yep. Okay. So I don’t think talking about podcasting management. It’s talking about your testimony. I see. I’m able to work from home. I’m able to run a business around my kids. I have found something that’s so simple for me and for so many other women to do from home. You guys, this pays way more than minimum wage.
(13:33)
This is like the answer, online marketing is blooming. Have you ever considered editing other people’s shows or helping produce? So you’re giving them the solution. It’s not podcasting they care about. They care about working from home, the solution to being home with their family. Okay. Okay. I never thought about the two of those together. I’ve thought about podcast management, but not even the twist of, because there is someone that has the podcast management course. And so I always feel like, Oh, but you, I mean, I say that to someone who created a podcasting course and there’s lots of podcasts courses, you know?
(14:10)
I’ve even thought about different spins of podcasting courses that I could be very niche with and, or different plans for podcasting and for launches and stuff like that. And that stuff though, Steph, that’s something you could create for your podcast producer student, as an advanced course, you’re at the top and you know how to do this and you are so good at it. You know how to run podcasts, how to produce them, how to edit them. Then you think about, okay, let me take 10 other moms. Do you take, let’s say these 10 women who are kind of like this, a type personality, hand them this course, they go and start to scale and create a business from home.
(14:50)
You’re not talking just anybody you’re talking specifically to this minimalish mom who wants to run a business from home. So she’s learning all these different things from you. And then maybe in three more months, those women that now have successful businesses, you say, Oh, now I have an advanced strategy for you guys, you’re going to help your clients have crazy launches. You’re going to help your clients with printables or tracking forms that you get to implement for your clients.
(15:14)
So you have add ons to upsell them down the road and you’re helping them scale their businesses all the while, having a huge community of minimalist moms that are learning life, business productivity, freelancing hacks from you. Does that make sense? Yeah. And so you think that there’s a big enough pool of mamas that want to work as podcast managers? Yes. This is where I’m always, this is the mindset shift. I know that there are so many freelancers that want to work from home and do you know VA’s and that’s like a huge pond or whatever, you know, the ocean sometimes I just wonder if I’m like, Oh, am I going to sell like 20 of the course? And that’s all forever and ever amen.
(15:57)
There are how many people on this planet Steph? Yeah. Billions, I think don’t quote us on that. I want to say, think of how niche this is. I’m helping specifically the Christian mompreneur launch podcasts and monetize them using courses. It is so specific. And she has to like rap music, iced coffee, like me, when I look like a hot mess, like it’s so niche, it’s so niche that I’m able to rise up to the very top of that niche. And you would think is that big enough? But here’s the beauty of the online space. I’m not just working with people in New Mexico. I have clients in Canada, Australia across the world because I’ve been able to rise up in this one specific space. Yeah.
(16:41)
There’s Pat Flynn and all these people that have courses, but that woman doesn’t want to work with those people. She wants to work with me because I am her best friend. She already knows me. Right. And so your people are going to go. I love Stephanie. She helps me organize. I get all of these productivity hacks. I’m learning how to minimalize this and that and help and scale in my business and even look at a business. And when you say I have a solution for you to work from home in the freelance VA space, and it’s a specific thing that I am the best at.
(17:13)
You get to own that market. You can own that. And so what if there’s other courses? No one’s course will be like you for her. That’s the difference. Yeah. Yeah. You’re going to speak to different people. I mean, it’s just the same reason why I bought your course over someone else’s sure exactly. You resonate with me and your listener is going to resonate with you period. And I think having that really micro niche solution for her, she doesn’t, I feel like people don’t go, Oh, I just want to be a VA. Cause again, even for them, that’s too vague. Where do I market? What’s my skill set. Am I good at graphics? Am I good at email management?
(17:52)
If you can say, you want to work from home and scale and give you the thing to do. It’s so easy. I can teach it to you. And then you can go out and snag five clients and edit five shows a week and make $2000 bucks a month. She’s like dying over that because all she wants to do is be home with her babies and be able to work this business around them. I think that’s so everything.
(18:22)
And you still get to talk about all the things you love. So whenever you get into a space like that, do you think, when do you start thinking about other ways to monetize it? Like, do you think that now, do you think that later, I mean, that is not the ultimate goal, but I guess that would be very important because I mean, we’re not working for free.
(18:41)
Where do you get that? Create your course, you start working with this and then like possibly creating some sort of like a membership or upleveling. Like when does it come to that point when you’re killing it with your course? Okay. Cause it’s easy to get distracted and be like, should I add this on? But you can’t do that. I don’t want to do you have to say, I’m going to own this space of helping the minimalist mama, just like her personality is just like me start a podcast producing or editing business. I’m going to be the best at it. And you go at that for six months, like as hard as ever. And you talk about it until every podcast episode talks about it. It’s a solution for them.
(19:22)
Think about what freebies that she might need that will lead her into that. And all of those things, which is a whole nother conversation. But I think it is, that’s the thing for now. And then when you’re like, okay, this is really scaling for me maybe you add on a private coaching component and you can do that at any point Steph, but fully shifting models to like now I’m adding a membership group or now I have three more courses. That was the mistake that I made in the beginning. I got so distracted by the shiny thing. Instead of picking the thing, the specific thing, the one thing, because I’m excited about it. Like you already have to do your show. Your podcast is going to be new. And this course do that with zero distraction for six months to a year and then evaluate.
(20:11)
And of course you’ll pivot and change as marketing work or urgency or, or launch strategies working and how should I maybe pivot or make them better, but don’t get distracted from that plan. Okay. So if I were to create a podcast, do you create the podcast strictly around podcast management or create the podcast about the minimalist mama? I mean, your podcast is not only creating a podcast. You’re talking about online business in general, but then at the end you have your pitch for the podcast. I mean, that’s to lead them into that. Steph, she doesn’t know she wants to be a podcast manager. So she’s not going to search for podcast management.
(20:54)
She doesn’t know you have the solution for her yet. So how does she know? She loves you. She’s a minimalist mama. Just like you. She’s a mom because we know we can help her work from home. That’s the need. That’s the woman. Number one priority is she’s a work from home mom. What are her personality traits? She’s a me, right? Yeah. That’s it. The podcast stuff. And you can talk about anything under that umbrella. So you talk about minimalism and productivity and organization and like home life and laundry and moms and working from home and okay. And then every show you’re monetizing with, Hey mama, this may not be for you, but maybe it is.
(21:46)
Have you ever considered making money while your kiddos are napping? Let me introduce you to podcast manager, the university. Yeah. I just went there because mine’s called this in this simple mini course. I’m going to teach you how to start your own freelancing business, where you can edit podcasts and produce them. Listen, this is way more simple than you think, let me help you make a great income around your kids schedule. Mama, check out more over at blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.com. Get into the topic that you really want to talk about. So you’re not even talking about podcasting. You’re not even talking about podcast producing.
(22:26)
You’re only talking about the solution for her to work from home. Does that make sense? Yes, because I think that’s where I’ve gotten so stuck on. I just don’t know if I want to talk about podcasting, because I will be blue in the face. I mean, you know, like I don’t know that I am that totally passionate, a hundred percent like to talk about it all day long, every day in and out. And you know, what’s cool though. This is a solution you have today. You can create this course while you’re going to be editing tomorrow, record it. Hi, here’s module one. And don’t be a one be like, this is how I record done. Okay. Yeah. All of it.
(23:02)
I know you hate to hear this, but it’s like done is better than perfect. And then in six months Steph, if you’re like, Oh, now I see a different solution for, or I want to do a product that has to do with productivity or minimalist, minimalishness or whatever. You can always pivot, but you have the income it’s already under your fingertips right now for her. So do that first, even though you’re like, I don’t know if that’s the thing. That is the thing that will make you money passively right now today. And it’s a solution that she needs desperately. And I have already recorded all of those things I need to, and I have them saved in my click up.
(23:42)
Now you’re gonna be on me all the time on Instagram, did you do your thing, yet? Yes I sure am. And I don’t know if this one is available, but I’m like obsessed with the minimalish mama, for some reason that came through for me right away with you. And I loved it. Cause it was like minimalist, which is that word for me, it means household life organizations, simplicity, business systems and happiness. Yes. That’s kind of the way I am. It’s like you like, you know exactly who you’re talking to when you’re talking to your Lola, cause you know what she’s struggling with. And every time I hear a friend’s like, Oh, I’m so stressed out. This is so stressful. Doing too many things doing. I’m like, Oh, just say no, just say no, like go over there and declutter. I love it.
(24:27)
Well, I’m cheering for you a good month before the launch. So you can start to gain some traction with your listener and then maybe you can launch that course January 15th, which is a perfect time to buy. Everyone wants to organize and make money from home. You could do like a promo there. That’s kind of the timeline that I would leap into this with. Hey guys, I hope that you absolutely loved this session with Steph. And the biggest takeaway for me is to realize that whatever your gift is, the thing you’re good at and you make money at it today, your zone of genius, if you will, or your zones of greatness, you can still create a passion fueled business using that by pairing it with your passions, the stuff you’re obsessed with.
(25:13)
You just have to dig deep enough to figure out the common denominator between the two. And I promise you in every single one of your cases, there is a common denominator that you can build a passionate business around because I believe, and you’ve heard me say this before that God placed those passions in your heart on purpose. It’s time to leap into those things so that you can wake up excited about what you’re doing here on earth. I want that for you. I want to just leave you with a prayer mama that wherever you’re sitting right now, breathing in, like we are literally living the dream. Count your blessings, notice your miracles, see the hand of God working in your life.
(25:51)
And I just pray that you are fueled with His provision, His favor, His courage as you continue pushing forward, know that even the hard is actually the blessing. Even the moments that you feel like giving up, the moments that don’t feel like they’re working in your life or that you’re struggling or that it’s painful or that it’s dark. It is preparing you for greatness and it’s right around the corner for you. So don’t give up, grab on with white knuckle ferocity and hold on tight to the promise that He gave you because He always makes good on His promise. I am cheering for you, I am here for you. I love you so much. Sending you a huge virtual hug as always, love and light, Stef.
