20 Easy Tips to Get Started on Your Podcast
The First Steps
Tip #1 – Get Clear on Your Niche
Choose a specific topic or theme for your podcast that will attract your target audience. This will bring faster growth if you are niche-specific.
Tip #2 – Get the Basic Equipment
Get a microphone, headphones, and recording software. You want to make sure your audio is decent quality so you sound good. Either the Yeti mic (which is around $100 on Amazon) or a Rode Podmic USB are good choices.
Tip #3 – Write an Outline
If you plan the main pieces of your episode, you will stay organized, on track, and not waste time.
Tip #4 – Add Introduction and Exit Music
An intro and exit jingle helps to grab and keep your listener’s attention.
Tip #5 – Keep Your Episodes Short and Punchy
Aim for a duration that gets to the point quickly and gives people one tangible outcome. Example: This is the # 1 ingredient to begin your meal prep for the week.
Get to Work
Tip #6 – Be Consistent
Stick to the regularly scheduled programming that you’ve committed to. Stef recommends one episode per week at a minimum or two per week if you can.
Tip #7 – Share Your Podcast
Tell people about your podcast. You can do this by:
sending an email
sharing on social media
creating Pinterest pins that lead to your podcast.
Tip #8 – Engage with Your Listeners
You build trust with your listeners when you engage with them. A podcast is a way to become friends with your listeners.
Tell them how to connect with you. You can do this by asking them to send you an email or join your Facebook group.
Tip #9 – Practice Your Improvements
Listen to old episodes and take note of the things that may bother you.
Do you say “um” over and over again? Practice saying that less in the next episode. Do you sound overly excited? Tone it down a notch next time. Do you have background noise? Invest in an area rug.
Make little changes week by week, and you will improve with time.
Tip #10 – Edit as You Go
There is no need to pay hundreds of dollars to edit a podcast episode. It’s okay if you make a few mistakes.
If the episode needs a small clipping, do it while you are recording. Let’s say your phone rings or your dog barks. Pause the episode, delete the noise, and click record again. This saves time.
Be Professional and Relatable
Tip #11 – Have Professional Cover Art
Invest in professional podcast cover art. This is non-negotiable. If you need help finding professional cover art check out the designs that Stef recommends. There are many options with incredible prices for you to choose from.
Tip #12 – Interview Guests
Invite guests on your podcast that you are learning from or who encourage you. Have a conversation with someone. This is a fun way to add variety to your podcast.
Tip #13 – Be a Storyteller
Share a story from your life that relates to the content of your episode. Make sure to keep it short and sweet. Stories help your listeners to relate and connect with you which, builds trust in your brand.
Tip #14 – Offer Tangible Value
If you are rambling on or only storytelling, you will lose your listener. People want practical advice that they can apply to their lives.
Be sure to have them do something with the content in your episode. You can do this in the form of a homework assignment.
Tip #15 – Make Your Podcast Titles SEO Optimized
Ask yourself if there is a relevant word or phrase that your listener may be searching in their search bar. An example is “20 new podcasting tips to get started as a beginner.” Podcasting tips are the relevant keywords.

Tip #16 – Look at Your Podcast Analytics
Go to your podcasting dashboard and look at your most listened-to episodes. This will show what your listeners want to hear more of. Lean into your audience’s behavior and intentionally give them more of what they want.
Tip #17 – Monetize Your Podcast
You can have a profitable podcast. Start with coaching, then transition to a course or online group coaching program. You can learn all the steps, strategy, implementation, and how to monetize in Podcast to Profit.
Tip #18 – Stay Up to Date on Podcast Trends
There are certain things you need to know about. When iOS 17 came out it derailed podcasters that were using downloads as their #1 tracking metric for analytics.
You need to be in the know on the basics. Don’t depend on other people for new trends. Do quarterly research on any news or updates in the podcast world.
Tip #19 – Connect With Other Podcasters
The podcasting world is small because around 90% of people who start a podcast quit within the first 12 months. If you keep pushing and doing the work, you can easily become one of the top 10% of podcasters.
Join podcasting communities. Work with other podcasters. Network, and grow. Be in the room. Trust the process. If you are looking for a free podcasting community, check out Stef’s free community and hang out with thousands of other podcasters like you.
Tip #20 – Have Fun
Enjoy the process of podcasting. Remember that God has equipped you with the gifts of a voice. He will give you the words to say. All you have to do is trust in Him.
Be courageous, and audacious, and step forward. Have fun talking to the people He’s called and set out for you. Let go of the pressure. Be consistent, but remember that podcasting is about true connection and helping other people with what you know.
