2 Podcasting Hacks Proven to Increase Engagement

I want to have a conversation with you about two podcasting hacks that are proven to increase engagement. These are going to help you make sure that your listeners stay super excited and they actually stay on the podcast app all the way through your episode.

Desiree’s Testimony – From No Podcast to Great Engagement!

My name is Dr. Desiree Cassell and I’m the host of The Balanced Momtality Women’s Health and Wellness podcast which is insane to say! If you had asked me a couple of months ago if I would ever launch a podcast, the answer would be a big fat no. But for some reason, Stef kept showing up in my world and I suddenly felt this strong urge to start a podcast.

So I took a leap of faith, purchased Podcast Pro University and binged through it. And I was able to launch a podcast in just a little over 30 days. Not only was I able to launch a podcast but I had a successful launch with the help of Stef and her team. I had over 200 downloads and over 30 written reviews. And I even made it in the top 50 in fitness in the US at number 35 which I’m so proud of.

Create a Show Where You Can Increase Engagement to Make an Impact

Hacks to Increase Engagement

For now, let’s look at the two hacks I have got for you to help you increase engagement on your podcast.

Hack # 1: Tell People What They Are About to Get Without Telling Them What It Is

The first hack I have for you to really increase your podcast engagement is to tell people what they are going to get without telling them what it is. 

We can use this episode as an example. Today we are going to learn two hacks to increase your podcast engagement.  As a listener or reader, you know that two things are coming. There are two things that I am going to tell you. But I don’t actually tell you what they are. This is going to get you to stay until you hear the second hack. Nobody is leaving once they have got the first hack. They need to know the second one.

This also works if you say something like ‘We are going to go through a formula right now to teach you how to create an extra hour of work time each week.’ You have just told them that they are going to learn a formula which means that you have different steps available for them. You have something that you are going to walk them through and so they will stay until the end to know the final outcome.

Use Your Titles or Your Introduction to Get Them Hooked

How do we tactically implement this? You can implement this in your podcast titles for example ‘Three Tips to Get Your Kids To Listen’. Or this can look like ‘Steps to Start Your Online Business When You Are Completely Stuck’. It’s really that teaser effect for your listener. They are now thinking that they are about to learn something with subsequent steps A, B, C and D and they need to know what they all are.

This can happen in the titles of your show and it can also happen in the introduction section of your podcast episode.

Hack # 2: Ask Questions

Moving on to the second hack, this is: ask questions. And not just any questions. Ask insightful, thought-provoking questions.

I participate in two different masterminds. In my personal mastermind, this is a space where I grow and stretch and get better. And then I have my peer-led mastermind where we work a lot on accountability, implementation, etc. This tip around asking questions really landed for me when I was recounting an experience I had had in my personal mastermind to my peer-led mastermind.

I was bringing to my peer-led mastermind what I had learned from the personal one and I recounted for them the questions that I had been asked. These questions included:

• How much is enough?
• How much are you allowed to work? Or How much are you allowing yourself to work?
• Can you define what the next level of success looks like for you?

I posed these questions back to my own mastermind and one of them said to me ‘Man, I do love a good, insightful question’ and she actually sat down, answered all the questions and had a breakthrough as a result.

The Power of Deep, Insightful Questions

Because of this experience, I thought to myself ‘How come I am not asking more deep, insightful questions right here on the podcast?’ If I were to do that, what an incredible way it would be to boost engagement. So I have tested it on a few different episodes. And it absolutely works! It gets people to take action. It gets them to think, to do the work and then ultimately to come and discuss it or share it over in our Facebook community which is such a fantastic outcome.

A Question for You Today

On the back of that second hack, the question I want to pose for you today is if you have not started a podcast, what is truly holding you back? Place your hand over your heart and I want you to go inward and upward. I want you to really sit with God on this one.

If you feel like Dr. Desiree and think that you wouldn’t be caught dead with a podcast or that there is no way that you are ever going to start a podcast, but there is something that is nudging you towards it, on paper during your quiet time, I want you to journal around the question ‘Why haven’t I started?’

If you have started a podcast but you haven’t taken it to the next level or you haven’t taken it seriously or you haven’t invested in the next step to grow your show into something that can truly be a means of producing income and impact for your family, why not?

Asking Myself Questions Took Me Higher Than I Imagined

I had to go to this really uncomfortable place in my own life where I had to stretch. And I had to get willing to invest in me while also being willing to do the hard things like traveling alone and being in a room full of strangers. I had to put my ego aside and get into a posture of learning and growth this year. It has truly been a catalyst to so many next levels that I didn’t even know were possible for me. And I think that may be the same for you.

So I pose those questions to you to prove a point that you will engage with me right know. And also to maybe help you reach that mental shift that you need in order to go to that place that God is really calling you to go.
