FULL EPISODE TRANSCRIPTION:
(00:00):
Hey, friends! I’m actually sitting here right now on a Sunday afternoon. I’m in my PJ’s. I had some iced coffee going to be real honest with you. And I have batched, this is my fourth episode today because, by the time you’re listening to this episode, I’m going to be in Disney World.
(00:23):
And, you know, I had to intentionally batch record every episode for the entire month of October, honestly, because we had so many trips in October plus Disney World will be gone for a bajillion years and I didn’t want to worry about it.
(00:41):
And so I have batched like a gangster for the past couple of weeks, and I realized I want to help you be able to batch record. So what I’m gonna talk to you today is six steps to batch recording your podcast episodes, and specifically how I did four episodes in just two hours.
(01:59):
First of all, what is batching? Batching is simply when you sit down and you record back to back multiple different podcast episodes, you are just preparing in advance all of your content. Why would we batch? Well, we would batch because you have somewhere to go, you got people to see you got things to do right now.
(02:25):
Really, what batching is to me is getting ahead of the game so I can live my life. I love being ahead. I love having one or two weeks of podcast episodes already in the queue and staying ahead so that I can fully be present with my family in between those times. And then you sit down and you batch again.
(02:46):
Does it always work out that way? No, it doesn’t. But my favorite thing is to plan into my productivity a way and a time for me to do this a couple of times a month, because it’s way more productive than trying to scramble, you know, on a Sunday night to get an episode ready for Monday or on a Wednesday night.
(03:06):
I want to be prepared and ahead so that I can live in more peace. Okay. So how do we batch? I’m going to go through six steps with you right now that I think are really going to help you optimize this process. Number one, you need to prepare your topic list. So before I sat down today, I knew what the four episodes were that I was going to record.
(03:29):
And guys I’m simply using my podcast show template that I give you inside of Podcast Pro University, my podcasting course, which tells me exactly what podcast number I’m on, what episode title I’m doing the status of the episode, what I’m promoting in the episode, the date that I’m going to publish, it has everything in here that we need to batch.
(03:53):
Now I’m also looking at my promotion calendar to see what am I going to be marketing. I’m sitting here recording this episode on October 10th. Well, it’s not going to air until November 4th. So I need to be looking at my tracker and know what I’m going to be telling you guys about what you’re going to hear in a minute.
(04:13):
So you’re going to have your topic list all prepped out and outlined. So number one, your topics are laid out. Number two is you’re going to outline now actually what I’ve done is I did one episode at a time all the way through these six steps. And then I went back and repeated again.
(04:32):
So for example, this episode, batch record your episodes. So I’m looking at something called an outline. Guys, this is how I prepare my episodes in less than 10 minutes. And I’m not going to go into that with you today because I actually have an episode on that, which is episode number 352. So you’re going to head to episode 352 to learn how I outline my episodes in less than 10 minutes. That’s going to be step two in how to batch record.
(05:09):
Number three, I have to plan for recording time. So you can’t just say I’m going to batch today and run away from your 37 children, your husband who needs something like yesterday, your messy house, like you’ve got to make sure that you’ve chosen a time intentionally where you can sit down for two to three hours.
(05:36):
This takes planning. So look at your schedule, look at your productivity plan, which I explained in detail in episode 341. And you’re going to plan a time. Just make sure that you don’t have anybody that needs anything. You can turn your phone off and you can fully be here recording.
(06:01):
Number four, you’ve got to prep for your productivity/focus. What does this mean? Well, if you’re Stef Gass, you have a huge cup of iced coffee and ice cold bubbly or LaCroix, a bottle of water. I mean, y’all, I seriously drink way too many things. I’m like, if I don’t have a yummy, delicious drink in my hand, I’m so sad. I need waters and bubblies and ice coffees and kombuchas, I’m so bougie with my beverage game.
(06:35):
The other thing is I do have my diffuser going right now, you can just diffuse any focus oils that you love. My desk is super clean. I’m comfortable. I’ve got a comfortable sweater, my comfortable PJ pants, like I’m super comfortable in my chair right now. All my stuff is here. The lighting is right, like just optimal comfort for myself because I’ve got to be productive.
(07:05):
And if I’m distracted, my phone’s also nowhere to be found. I literally don’t even have it in the room with me. It’s on an airplane. I let everybody know mama’s recording. Don’t come looking. I’m not here. Ignore me. It’s like, I’m not even here. I told the hubs not available right now. I’m recording. So remove any distraction, clean your area, set your ambience, get comfortable because you are not going anywhere for two to three hours.
(07:33):
Number five, this is super important for so many of you. Number five, progress over perfection. If you just sit there and you fuss with episode one for an hour, you have lost all of your batch time that you could be recording. Get through it, just get through it. Y’all let me tell you something. You’re going to start podcasting. And then you’re going to realize that you blink and you have 300 episodes and you blink and you have 500 episodes.
(08:07):
And time is time and it flies. And so stop obsessing about your episodes. Do it, rip the band-aid off. Let it be messy. Guys, there was an episode I batched today. You probably heard it already. And like my phone just dings. You know, I was checking it or I had it in here during that one and it made a noise. I left it, whatever.
(08:33):
There was one time where my son knocked on the door and left it in, this is not about perfection. None of them from today had been edited by the way. I’m not editing anything. If I make a big mistake, I pause my episode. I click stop. I delete where I messed up and I keep recording because this is about getting great content out quickly, not putting out bad content quickly. Great content quickly, efficiently. And with intention, not perfection.
(09:05):
Number six. The last thing that you’re going to do is as soon as you’re done with one episode, you label it appropriately. Save it where it belongs. I teach you guys in Podcast Pro University how critically important it is for you to save your episodes in a specific location with a labeling system.
(09:25):
Already has metadata and SEO in there teach you that in Podcast Pro University as well. And then my step is I actually upload it into Podbean and I write the description because here’s my deal. If I don’t take care of it right here right now, I lose it.
(09:43):
Now you don’t have to do the upload part. I’m just doing that right now. Cause I’m leaving town and it has to be done. But if you just want to batch stuff out as like a backup plan. Great. But don’t forget that you did it. So label your episode appropriately, do all the SEO and metadata so you don’t have to do it later. You’re already in there and then head over to your podcast, episode tracker and put it in here so that you do not forget that you batched that episode.
(10:13):
So let me recap for you. Six steps to how I batch recorded four episodes in two hours. Number one, I built a topic list based on my promotion calendar. And I’m using for that my podcast tracker template. Guys, if you’re not in Podcast Pro University yet stop plan, girl, stop trying to duct tape your business together.
(10:40):
Let’s do it right. It’s going to save you tons of time. The ROI on investing in yourself is priceless. And my podcasting course is gonna change your life. If you already have a podcast and you didn’t take PPU, I’m telling you it’s super worth it. I teach you literally everything you could possibly imagine about podcasting from planning to promoting, to recording, to editing, to pitching, to scaling, to SEO and metadata basics, to promotion on Pinterest.
(11:08):
To even monetization, I have a bonus in there about how to monetize your show. It’s so legit and my podcasting community that you get when you buy the course, I mean that alone is priceless and you’re getting that for free. You get live Q&A in my student community, every other week, podcastprouniversity.com.
(11:27):
And if you do have a podcast and you want to go from part-time to this is legit my business model, I’m mini Stef Gass and my podcast is how I make money and this is insane and I don’t have to be on social media. And I want to do this with a group of God-centered faith, led women just like me. I want accountability. I want to hang out with other women who are doing this work well. I want to have office hours.
(11:55):
I want to have Stef power coach me through this process of getting my show to rank, growing my show, scaling it, and then making a course program or coaching business to monetize the show with all in 90 days, mind you, Podcast to Profit Mastermind. It’s starting super soon, guys, head to podcasttoprofitmastermind.com. Get your application.
(12:20):
And immediately we are going to go ahead and start accepting applications and completing registrations in December. So you only have a couple of weeks left to get your application in before we started the whole entire process. So 3, 2, 1 go and let me finish recapping.
(12:40):
So one was topic list based on your promotion calendar. Number two is you’re going to outline your episode. And I want you to do this in 10 minutes or less. You can learn all about that on episode 352. Number three, you’re going to plan a recording time where ain’t nobody going to bug you. You are in it to win it. You have all the things taken care of so that you can pour into recording for two to three hours.
(13:10):
Number four, you are going to prep for productivity/focus. This means getting your ambiance right, making sure you have chargers, making sure that you have all the beverages, whatever makes you happy. You’re comfortable in your recording space. Number five, you’re going to boom, AKA, you’re going to do this. You’re going to rip off the bandaid. You’re going to record. You’re going to focus. You’re going to dig in and you’re going to let some of it be messy.
(13:41):
Progress over perfection otherwise you’re not going to batch anything. You’re going to have one over edited over thinking over produced podcast. Nobody cares. People do not care. You can probably hear my boys screaming right now in the background. Sorry, not sorry. You know, this is life, folks.
(14:03):
Number six, you’re going to label and save your episode and then put it in an organized folder. And also you’re going to add it to your podcast, promotion template from PPU. Okay, because you don’t want to lose your batched episodes. You guys, I have learned this one from experience I would batch and then I would have no idea what I batched two weeks prior and I wouldn’t even know where they are.
(14:26):
So you’ve got to label, save and properly organize and then put in your template every single episode that you have batched and then kind of a bonus thing, if you have time for it, which I love doing this if I have time is to go ahead and upload that batched to episode into Podbean, put my quick description in there for the team and schedule it. So you’re done, which is amazing.
(14:50):
Now that’s a bonus depending on the time that you have. Cause you could always do that while you’re multitasking or whatever. So that’s my six step process for you of how to batch, how to bust out some serious content in just a few hours.
