FULL EPISODE TRANSCRIPTION:
(00:00)
Hey ladies, welcome to today’s podcast strategy session with Lis Hammons, and we are digging into mapping out a podcast for her. Today, we go through the four tiers of podcast creation. We talk about how that might look and feel, the branding of it, the avatar that she might be serving, and we come up with a ton of content ideas that she can roll with. I hope you enjoy. Grab your notebook and pen and think about how this might apply to you as you move forward with your biggest and most incredible dreams.
(00:45)
So let’s dig into the goal for today. I think from your notes here, basically coming up with the four tiers of the podcast, right? The name, tagline, description and some episodes. Yeah. Okay. And after that, if we have time, just the monetization aspect of it. Okay, cool. So right now what you’re doing is you are doing a wine MLM, right. Right. Where are you with that? Because I think it does make a huge difference if we’re talking this is my full time, this brings in all the revenue or I dabble, right?
(02:00)
I want it to be more productive than it is. I’m an executive manager, which is kind of like the first bigger promotion. I have a team I could advance today or the last month to a different title, but my team’s not really recruiting. And so I’m passionate about the product. I really believe in eating clean and all the things that Scout and Cellar aligns with. I would like to incorporate it, but I don’t want it to be like, Ew. Yeah. Like I’m in a wine network, marketing business. Join me. Exactly.
(02:34)
I have never done network marketing. I get very defensive over it. You know, because I feel like it’s been so squirmy. I don’t know. People look at it poorly. For sure. I mean, and it’s just an industry thing. So get used to that. You’re gonna get a lot of that for sure. But it’s all in the way that you market it. And I think it can absolutely pair in, especially if we’re talking to this mom, friend, wife, daughter aspect that you had mentioned, obviously wine goes in perfectly with that. So it’s just in the way that you market it.
(03:09)
I think just leave network marketing out of it completely like, I market a wine that I’m in love with. And here’s why. I don’t know I anything about this company, but you know all about it. So you can be like, here’s why I love this. And I wouldn’t even ever say the name of your network marketing business ever, and it’s just the industry, it has nothing to do with you or your company, people have either been in network marketing and there are definitely highs and lows to the industry and they’ve been chased down by someone. And so they’re like, oh no.
(03:44)
It doesn’t matter that it’s a network marketing business, cause you could be selling wine that you buy at Total Wine and you’re flipping and you have your own distribution labeling company. It doesn’t matter. Right. So you’re just saying I have a wine I’m obsessed with and here’s all the reasons why this is my favorite. If you want more info on the wine that I love and promote, Hey shoot me a DM or an email or you have a direct link over to your sales page. Okay. Does that make sense? So it’s kind of like attraction marketing that’s infused. Sure, sure.
(04:18)
Let’s talk about the podcast. You had mentioned highs and lows of being a mom, friend, wife, daughter. Let’s niche in on this. Yes. So when we look at Lis, what is the why, what about the highs and lows of being a mom, friend, wife, daughter? Talk to me about that. Do you have an idea of what that would mean? Do you have examples? I do. So I actually did a Google form, which is kind of dorky of my friends and said, what are your mom issues and stuff like that? I mean a lot of them were getting lost in raising the kids, in the relationship with their husband, that kind of stuff. A lot of it was parenting stuff.
(05:02)
I mean social media with kids and screen time kind of things like that. I don’t know. Aging parents, stress and anxiety, all that. It’s just so broad and I do want it to be narrowed down. Yeah. So what about there’s tons of problems and pain points we can tackle. But what about you when someone comes to you, Lis, what are the things that you feel like I could talk about this all day. I know this really well. Yeah. I feel like my thing is especially positivity, I pride myself on finding the good. I really do try to find the good in whatever the situation is with gratitude and scripture.
(05:50)
I get up early every morning and do that kind of thing. Those are my positive things, but like I’m known as like the techy person and I’m really organized and those kind of things, but I just don’t know how that could play off. I don’t know how to talk about it. You know what I mean? Is it parenting specifically like there’s positivity, so that’s great. Is it when it comes to parenting or is it when it comes to you as a woman and a mom and like more self? Yeah, probably more self. Yeah. I tried to do it with parenting. That’s hard. I have three kids. Parenting’s cray cray.
(06:33)
You know what’s so funny that just came into my mind. I have no idea why, put on your positive pants. I love it. I’m like, I just thought of this. Like if you’re talking to mom or wife or another, you right. You’re talking to you. And you’re like, if I was to have this podcast and really love being different, instead of it being positive parenting, but we still want it positive but the core common denominator that you wanna roll with. What if it was something kind of funny, like put on your positive pants and like it’s something like navigating the mess and stress for busy moms. Oh, I like that. Yeah.
(07:19)
I don’t know why. I just wrote it down. It came from, I have no clue. I’m like put on your positive pants. Like that’s kind of funny. Let me see if that’s available. I don’t know. How does that even feel for you? I guess I like it, it’s kind of catchy. I guess, in my head, and I know we’re supposed to do stuff that’s SEO, searchable and all that. But I was like Lis Out Loud. I don’t know why that seemed like something catchy. That’s so unclear. Like that could be anything in the world. And it doesn’t mean you can’t have that later when you’re an Angie Lee. Right. You go, I’m gonna rebrand now that everybody knows me.
(07:56)
If you had something that’s obvious, like put on your positive pants, mama. Right? Ooh, I like that. And in the little tagline on the meme, on the podcast graphic, navigating the mess and stress for the busy mom. It’s so obvious, like this is gonna be fun because she has a quirky name. Searchability has positive mom right there in the title. It’s so obvious. And I like, what’s the promise? Well, it’s navigating the mess and stress of being a busy mom. And that really opens it up for you to talk about what you said earlier here in your notes, which was the highs and lows of being a mom, friend, wife, daughter.
(08:39)
You can monetize your podcast with your wine business from day one. Cause hello, like wine and positive pants and mom life like duh. Perfect. Absolutely. That’s great. Okay. I just checked on iTunes and it’s available. Thank you. No podcast there called that. Let me check GoDaddy for your domain. So would you do that? Would you put the domain under the podcast name? I bought Lis Hammons, I was in real estate before I did Scout and Cellar, so I just got it as soon as I started real estate. Yeah, I think you can brand under yourself, but you still wanna get your domain name that matches your podcast because if your podcast blows up, someone’s gonna grab your domain so that they can play off of your success. Ah, okay.
(09:27)
It’s just to cover your butt and it’s only $11 bucks a year, so get it and then you can redirect it into your Lis website as a little tab. Okay. and putonyourpositivepantsmama.com is available. That’s awesome. Or putonyourpositivepantspodcast. Let me check, that one is also available. Okay thanks. It’s so fun when it’s already available and you know, it’s meant to be. Yes, that’s so great. My kids are like, you’re gonna do what? A podcast? It’s gonna be great. What are you gonna talk about? You, and your mess and how you annoy me.
(10:16)
What is the term? Like? My son had a term yesterday. He’s like, don’t be a Karen. And I’m like, what? What does that even mean? I had to go Google it. I’m like, you’re gonna be on my podcast enlightening all of us mothers of terminology. Oh my gosh. That is a great idea. You really think so? I think that’d be so funny. You should have your kid come on in one of the episodes and it’s like mom, get with it. Or like get with the times mom could be the title and he could have like five or six of the new acronyms that we need to know about as parents. It would be so funny. Yes. I know. I thought that would be huge.
(10:54)
Don’t be a Karen. Oh my gosh. Yes. So love that. So obsessed with that. Imagine this for your graphic. What if you had a cartoon, like a character drawing as your meme and it’s like a mom with a baby on her hip or whatever. And her pants are up, her jeans, but it says like positive across the butt. Like your positive pants are on. Oh, that’s awesome.
(11:23)
We had a girl in Podcast Pro University who found an artist, and I will find out who it is on Fiverr. And you would not believe the channel art he did for her. And so it was a character of her with her cat cuz whatever that’s what it’s about. But immediately that’s what came to my mind instead of pretty brand, it’s like, no, this is funny. Like positive pants are on and also don’t be a Karen, oh my gosh. It’s so funny. So funny. I love it. That’s awesome. So, I have this picture, I was playing on Canva and I was looking to do my artwork or whatever. And it’s embarrassing, but it’s like, one of those parent fails.
(12:04)
My mom and dad in like 1977 thought it’d be funny to put an old unlit cigarette in my mouth. And so I’m in my footie pajamas and my fat cheeks, I’m just sitting there like parenting gone bad or not positive parenting, I don’t know. Like there could be a lot of bad stuff with it, I guess. So, you were already on this route. That’s hilarious. I think that’s so funny. Do you think that I should have somebody professionally do it? Yeah. I will tell you, I would rather you guys spend a hundred dollars on kick ass channel art than have a better mic. It’s that important.
(12:43)
Especially if you’re in this mom category, there are a lot of podcasts here and you wanna stand out. It’s quirky. It’s funny. I think for sure, having your son on explaining to us kid code words that you need to know. That’s the kind of stuff that isn’t around. What is around is like positive parenting 101. How to like your kids, boring. And I’m not saying we don’t wanna infuse that, but I like your spicy stuff too. Okay.
(13:12)
So I would pro probably invest in channel art and I don’t think he was expensive. Let me find it. Cuz it’s in our Podcast Pro group, she put it in there because everyone was like blown away how great it came out. Okay. Well is it on the Facebook group? Yes. Okay. Cause I’m in there so I can search it out. Cool. If you want, we’ll get that done after. Now what is this about? So let’s get even more clear because we’ve got this idea. I really love the idea of like quirky and fun.
(13:40)
Let’s talk more about you. So what else do you wanna bring to the table? Do you want it to be interview form, like funny, open conversations with moms and kids? A little bit, because I think that’s super fun. I almost feel like it would be fun to bring on a mom and they have to talk about a hot mess mom situation that they’ve recently been in, and you guys are laughing about it. It’s a funny story, so if you were to think back and go, what is the funniest story that you can think about that recently you’ve got on through with your kids?
(14:17)
My kid was just in the car talking to Siri and he was like, he’s three. Right? So he’s like with the iPad and he’s going Siri and she goes, hello? And he goes, oh hi, Hey Siri. And she goes, I’m here. Oh look, Siri’s coming on on my phone right now. He’s is like, hi, I have a question. She’s like, I can’t hear you. And he’s like going on and on with her. And finally he gets so mad and he’s yelling at her Blippi! How cool would that be if you had someone and they have to share a super funny story that they’ve recently gone through.
(14:58)
I don’t know what else you guys bring into it. Like, okay, you share a really funny story, everyone’s laughing. And then you share what’s the biggest win you felt that you’ve recently had in this messy motherhood journey and maybe they share that. And maybe the third thing is like a lesson or a tactical that people can take away. Yes. I almost feel like it’s navigating the mess and stress with a dose of laughter or something. Oh, I like that. Cause we are silly.
(15:34)
I just bought my daughter a shirt, my girlfriend and I both bought our daughters the same shirt, so it’s like having a weird mom builds character. I’m like for sure, because I like humor. I need humor, and a little sarcasm in there for sure. And so imagine if that was a title of an episode. Yes. That tagline of the shirt and you get on the episode and whether that one is with your girlfriend or solo and you’re like, guys, I just bought this shirt and I just wanna talk about this for a second. Yeah, for sure.
(16:05)
Let’s talk about bringing the weird back into parenting. Why I love infusing weird and sarcasm. And let me share a funny story with you guys about this. What it makes me think of when I think of that tagline is that my mom would turn rap music on in the car just to embarrass me and she’d start dancing and I’d be mortified. I’m like, oh my gosh. Not only am I in my grandma’s blue station wagon right now, but my mom is also dancing to rap music. Right. The funny thing is I do it now, right? Oh absolutely. Oh yeah. I will never forget.
(16:39)
My mom ran over the curb my very first day of eighth grade in a brand new school in her Camaro, so she’s dropping me off and all the kids are out front of the school, my very first day. And she’s like, no, it’s fine. Have a great day. I’m like, oh my gosh. So, that’s kind of like what I feel would set you apart from what else is out there is this. You’re navigating the mess and stress of motherhood with a dose of laughter and then every episode follows that format, right?
(17:11)
So I would almost think of maybe it’s a 50/50, just because interviews do take some more time to put together. And I don’t want you to start with a hundred percent interview format, because it’s a lot of work. But you could do a 50 50. I would keep them definitely 30 minutes or less, because moms don’t wanna listen to our long episodes as you know. Right. It’s basically that whole thing, funny quirky titles once a week, they’re coming out and one can be like that shirt, tagline, whatever that said, the next one is like your son and he’s breaking down these crazy acronyms that we need to know about like kid code 101. Yes, I love that.
(17:52)
Maybe the next one is like weird crap your mom did. You’re reminiscing with a girlfriend about these funny stories that you and I just talked about. It’s hilarious. I think the lesson in it is that it’s so memorable to us now. And even though it felt like mortifying, it shaped us for the better, because now we’re not afraid to make our kids laugh and to be awkward. And we wanna create memories down the road where our kids go, holy smokes. My mom did that weird crap too. It is so funny to me now, so that she’s not afraid of being weird or being different. Absolutely. I love that. Thank you.
(18:31)
How would you monetize on that though? I mean, would you just go off the wine? I think for right now, you’d go off the wine, because hello, this is perfect. This is perfect for wine, but down the road. I think there’s a lot of different things that you can do maybe six months in when you’ve got a better baseline of like which episodes are doing really well. Sponsorship would be a good one for this, and also, those funny t-shirts right. Finding a company that has hilarious mom mugs that wants to sponsor the show. Okay. But, I think that’s a bit down the road.
(19:02)
Then even further down the road might be, is there some type of course that we can create, there’s a million with ways to monetize something, but we don’t know what it is until our audience tells us what it is. Okay. I’ve heard you say that. That’s true. So we need an audience first, but you already have a wine business. This woman probably drinks wine. Oh yeah. That’s my avatar. So yeah.
(19:29)
So it’d be great for you from day one to be like, Hey, what up messy mama. Today’s gonna be so cool. We’re gonna be debunking all of these crazy kid codes that are going on today, so my kid just called me a Karen. I didn’t know that was a thing you guys, so we’re gonna find out from him, all the things we need to know. It’s gonna be so much fun. And your kid’s not gonna know that you’re in the know about what they’re saying. But first I wanna remind you that messy moms drink wine and I’m gonna make that okay. So if you need to grab a bottle for this weekend that’s coming up, have some girl gab with your friends, holler at me.
(20:04)
I have my favorite organic wines that I’m obsessed with, and they’re super affordable. So if you drink two bottles, it’s okay cause two for the price of one. Hit me up on IG, and so I’ll share with you my favorite brand or head over to Lis blah blah blah .com/wino and grab a bottle right now. That’s awesome. So it’s kinda funny, making a joke out of it. It never said the name of the company or the pricing, and it was very light and fluffy, but the fact is if you can infuse, it’s affordable. If it’s organic, if it’s whatever, talking about why you love this particular one, so she’s gonna be curious to go to your website slash wino. I think it’d be super funny or like messy mom loves wine or something. That’s cute.
(20:52)
That could be your sales page right there. But, all companies are different if they make you use their sales page or if they let you use buttons that link to their sales page. And, I think we have a blog button on the back office. So yeah, shop my favorite wines or something. Speaking of which, the FedEx guy is delivering wine right now to my friend, so cue the wine guy.
(21:39)
So what else comes through? Are you feeling really clear on the type of content that you would create? Do you want to brain more episode ideas? I really would. If we have a few more minutes I guess. I would love to kinda think out some more episode ideas. Okay. So I think, what else can we put in here? So when we’re thinking about that, mom, that’s kind of like us, she’s super, you know, open-minded she likes to laugh. She goes to happy hour with her girlfriends.
(22:09)
She probably has kids like ranging from younger to high school. I’m thinking maybe like she’s got three kids like you, so they’re kind of spread out. Yeah. What other topics do you think make her really laugh, but that we can also give her some tangible stuff in there. Maybe that you’re going through. I mean, I definitely think, you know, the relationship, the mom-daughter relationship puberty, sassiness, all that kind of stuff. How about slash the sass? Oh, I like that. That’s great.
(22:37)
So, you’re sharing a funny story of how, and they’re all gonna resonate with you, right? You’re like, oh my gosh. So Patricia, the other day, ladies, she did this thing and I wanted to slap her. Do you guys ever wanna just slap your daughter? Because I think that’s probably not just me. Is that just me? And like you can kind of share the funny story and then maybe you can talk about, okay, all jokes aside. So, this is kind of how I’m navigating this.
(23:02)
Maybe you have a conversation with someone else that has a daughter in a similar age and you guys are bouncing ideas and things that have been working for you. That would be super great. What else? So, I have a whole list of like parenting stuff, you know, like real stuff. So gimme some of those cuz how can we make those fit this brand? My middle son is on Acutane and that was a big decision. And, that’s a hard medicine, so I’ve had a couple of moms give me grief a little bit over it, about how bad it is. I mean, we obviously consulted with a couple of physicians before we did it, but it was a hard decision.
(23:40)
How about an episode that’s dealing with judgey Judy’s? Yes. And then you can say one of my mom friends actually said in the Google form, women need to support each other more, you know? Yeah. And I think that’s what that episode can be about, but you can also infuse these stories that make her resonate with you and share. We have a child we had to deal with should we put ’em on medication? We were at doctors, and we were going back and forth. So, I was judging myself, let alone dealing with external judgment and kind of letting her know, like you’re not alone in hard choices.
(24:11)
Then maybe the takeaway is the decision is ultimately like you and God’s and you have to let what other people think about you and criticism and that’s kind of the tangible takeaway for her. That’s really good. Ok, so what else? Getting kids to remember things is something, because they’re constantly forgetting, you know, their rear ends if they weren’t attached. That’s so funny. How can we make that funny? Let me think. If their heads weren’t attached, they’d leave them. What about like, listen to me, Linda.
(24:50)
Then it can be like, the whole joke is you’re sharing stories. Again, all of this stuff totally resonates as a mom. I’m talking to my kid, I’ve said 17 times put on your shoes. Yes. And then he’ll be like, wait, what did you say as he stares at his Pokemon Nintendo game? And I’m like, oh yeah, like losing my mind. You know? And so I think share these funny stories, share some funny stuff of what’s happened recently and then be like, okay, but real talk, like how can we better this situation? And whether that’s an open convo with another mom, whether that’s you infusing some tips of what you’ve seen.
(25:26)
I think it’s a great thing for you to be like, you guys, I don’t have all of this stuff figured out, but here’s the situation. I am a real human mom. That’s failing in many areas, winning in some that I wanna navigate this space with you. And let’s just have open dialogue about what’s working, what’s not working and laugh about it because why are we taking this so seriously? Absolutely. That’s a great show. I mean like whole podcast description. There you go. Yeah. Oh, we have to do that before we get off. Okay.
(25:55)
Let’s do one more episode and then I’ll do the description with you. Okay. Let’s see. I mean like overscheduling is one. I mean, some of these are pretty intense, you know? Let’s see. So frazzled Felicia. Oh my all I hear is like bye Felicia. Yeah. Ooh. That’s a good title too. For like maybe the judgy Judy one. Yes. Is Frazzled a bad look? That’d be a cute one. I like adding the names on the end of ’em too. I mean, it goes back to the whole Karen thing. Maybe that’s like a theme for you. That’d be funny. Okay. I love that.
(26:43)
Anything that sets you apart, like people are like, oh, I have to abide by the podcasting rules. I’m like, there are no podcasting rules and the more different you are and the more funny, and the more you resonate, that is what lights, your fire, it’s being different. It is, but just a quirk, you know? Exactly. Okay. So when I think of this show, let me just riff. Don’t try to write it down. Cause I’ll be too fast, but you can listen to the recording. Now description is longer and we’re infusing all of these keywords that’ll really trigger this mom. Okay. And then in the intro, when you read it, just take your favorite three or four sentences from the description. And that’s like an intro. Okay.
(27:31)
So something funny, like, Hey, what up messy mama. I see you over there drinking that wine, living in this stress and mess of motherhood. And why are you taking this all so seriously? That’s my question, because I think it’s time that we put on our positive pants and we treat this whole thing with a big dose of laughter and a bigger glass of wine. Hey, what’s up? I’m Lis. And I wanna make you laugh through the journey of motherhood with super funny, sometimes embarrassing stories, lots of tactical tips to help us find the laughter in everyday situations and have more fun as a mama.
(28:09)
Let’s get real. This is a blessing. Isn’t it? Oh, that’s awesome, and I love ending it on a question, because this motherhood thing is all a big blessing… right? That’s great. And then, you know, inside that description as well, you wanna have like connect and then you’ll have your website and then email us at and you have a website. And so you can just have putonyourpositivepantsmama@Gmail for now, if you want. Okay. Doesn’t need to be fancy.
(28:43)
Then your website can be like one page for now. I don’t know what you’ve built, but don’t wait to do the show. You’re a three. I’m not worried about you. You’re gonna get it. I am. And I’ve been working on it. I mean, I have all my tabs open right now, which is highly annoying, but like I’m trying to not lose my place, but you know, like, okay, I’ve got Go Daddy here with this. And yeah. So I’m trying. So I am pumped. This is a show I would love. I’m excited for you. And I think it’s gonna be so great. I’m very grateful. Thank you. I’m so happy I found you. Yay.
(29:16)
All right, friend, I’ll get you all of that in an email. And I’m excited for you. Sounds wonderful. Have a great weekend. Well, I hope you guys love that episode with Lis.
